Beautiful sand dunes with heather, relatively small but well worth it. A highlight of our walk.

The ideal time to enjoy beautiful colours is certainly the month of September when the heathers are in bloom.

The church of Opoeteren was a relatively late foundation of the Counts of Loon, probably dating from the 12th century. In 1274, a Gothic choir was added to the existing church. The current nave probably dates from the 15th century. In 1522, aisles were added to the nave; in 1571, the tower was rebuilt and the north chapel added, both in late Gothic style. In 1905-06, under Pastor D. Verdurmen, the church, except for the nave, the tower, and the north chapel, was demolished and rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style by V. Lenertz (Leuven) and H. Martens (Stevoort). The tower was raised six meters. (Inventory of Immovable Heritage)

This tree chapel is still carefully maintained, and the decorations are regularly updated. The poem has since been placed on a metal plate.

The Dorpermolen is a corn watermill with a metal undershot wheel on the Bosbeek stream at Dorpermolenstraat 2. There, it forms a typical village landscape in the shadow of St. Dionysius Church. The Dorpermolen is one of ten remaining watermills along the Bosbeek stream in Maaseik, but it is distinct from the others. The elegant mill building is positioned perpendicular to the stream and has a hipped roof on the waterfront. There is a 1.2-meter drop and a very narrow bypass on the right bank. The millwork of the Dorpermolen (dating from the 17th or 18th century) is still entirely made of wood and is in its original condition, which is very rare. Two pairs of millstones lie in the stone loft. It was built in 1530. The mill building was a half-timbered structure filled with clay. (Mill Echoes)
