While hiking Cardigan, it is greatly recommended to head over to Firescrew while your at it, as the views are astounding. Coming from the AMC lodge in Alexandria, NH gives you the opportunity to make a loop that covers both summits with numerous trail options from family friendly to the Holt trail, considered one of the toughest (but shortest) rock scrambles in New England. If ascending Holt, I would recommend not bringing along dogs or children as it is a real challenge. Also avoid it during wet or icy days.

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails in Cardigan Mountain State Forest, but they must be kept on a leash. The terrain can be rugged, especially on the open granite ledges near the summit, so ensure your dog is comfortable with this type of environment.
The main parking area is at Cardigan Mountain State Park on the west side of the mountain. This lot provides access to popular routes like the West Ridge Trail. For trails on the eastern slope, parking is available near the AMC Cardigan Lodge. Both lots can fill up quickly, especially on weekends, so arriving early is recommended.
Yes, the Cardigan All Persons Trail is an excellent option for families with strollers or visitors seeking a gentle walk. This half-mile accessible trail has a hard-packed surface and offers a serene experience through the forest. For a slightly more challenging but still manageable family hike, the West Ridge Trail is the most direct and least strenuous route to the summit.
The hike to the historic fire tower at the summit is a highlight for many visitors. The tower sits atop the mountain's bare, granite dome and offers spectacular 360-degree views. Most trails converge at the summit, making the fire tower accessible from various routes. The final approach involves walking across open rock, which can be windy.
Winter hiking is possible, but it presents significant challenges. The trails will be covered in snow and ice, requiring proper gear like microspikes, snowshoes, and trekking poles. The exposed summit is subject to severe weather, including high winds and cold temperatures. Only experienced and well-equipped winter hikers should attempt a summit climb.

The well-maintained and varied trail system, which combines forested paths with exciting open-ledge scrambling, is another commonly mentioned highlight.
For a rewarding hike that often sees fewer crowds than the main western trails, consider the Mount Cardigan summit loop from Welton Falls State Forest. This route approaches from the east and provides a different perspective of the mountain, still leading to the fantastic summit views.
Yes, for a more challenging loop that includes two summits, the Mount Cardigan summit – Firescrew Mountain loop from Orange is an excellent choice. This trail traverses both Mount Cardigan and the neighboring Firescrew Mountain, offering varied terrain and expansive views throughout the hike.
The West Ridge Trail is the most direct and easiest ascent to the summit, making it very popular. The Holt Trail is significantly steeper and more strenuous, involving more scrambling over rock ledges. Many hikers choose to ascend via the West Ridge Trail and descend via the Holt Trail for a more challenging and varied loop.
While the main park trails are not known for large waterfalls, the nearby Welton Falls State Forest loop provides access to Welton Falls.
