The church of St. Pelagius and St. Maximus is the ancient Catholic cathedral of Novigrad. The basilica still shows traces of its original form, dating back to the 5th-6th century, at the time of the creation of the diocese of Novigrad. Traces from this period are visible on the north longitudinal wall. The old bell tower on the facade of the cathedral was demolished in 1874 to make way for a new, independent bell tower. The church has been renovated on several occasions: 1408, 1580, 1746, and 1775. In the Middle Ages, the interior was decorated with frescoes, as evidenced by some remains on the south side. The neoclassical facade was completed in 1935. Inside the church, beneath the baroque altar, there is a crypt dating back to the early Romanesque period.
