The Eispinge (Eispinge Mine) is a collapsed historic ore mine just below the summit of the Plattenberg. A remarkable geologic and biotope site (together with the neighboring Wolfspinge). Its name derives from the fact that ice and snow used to be found year-round in the narrow rock cleft at 1,000 meters above sea level. During the Battle of the Nations in 1813, several wagonloads of ice were transported from here to Leipzig to cool the wounded. A short path leads down to a small viewing platform. The last few meters are now closed, apparently due to the danger of rockfalls, but you can still get a good view of the pinge from an unsecured ledge.
