The Church of St. Stanislaus Kostka in Śmigiel has a remarkable history, as it originally served as a Protestant (Evangelical) church, and after World War II it was taken over by the Catholic Church.

The present church was built in the late Gothic style in the first half of the 15th century, most likely between 1439 and 1443. The church was founded by Bishop Andrzej of Bnin of Poznań. It was established as the main parish church of the newly founded city, taking over the functions of the older Church of St. Vitus.

The current church was built in 1769, most likely on the site of an earlier, destroyed church from the 14th century.

Currently, St. Vitus Church, listed in the register of historical monuments, serves as a cemetery church and is, above all, a valuable monument of wooden architecture, testifying to the long and rich history of Śmigiel.

Absolutely worth visiting if you can, but hard visit on a bike as the track leading to it is too sandy for gravel bikes at times. The area around the ruin in well maintained and there quite a few small statues people have put in and on the walls. Very atmospheric.

Legend has it that the name of the town of Włoszakowice comes from the word "hairy" or "owl". Over the centuries, especially since the 17th century, the inhabitants of Włoszakowice, due to their alleged kinship with the owl, were called "Sowijacy". This term, initially perhaps joking or pejorative, over time became a source of pride and a symbol of local identity.
