Synagogue in Orla

Highlight • Religious Site

Attention! Do you want to visit the Synagogue - call. Someone will always come and show you around. Marek - 501347273, Darek - 608262172. Interesting place, unfortunately, a lot of money is needed to restore its former appearance. It's good that, at least to a small extent, it was saved from total destruction. No Jewish community takes care of it. The state in which it is located can be owed to the Save from oblivion foundation. Still, it's worth going and seeing.

The historic structure was designed by Eng. Georg Christoph Mehrtens.
Originally, the bridge consisted of 18 spans and stood over the Vistula River in Bydgoszcz. Built in 1891-1893, it was the longest crossing in Germany, and after 1920 it became the longest crossing in Poland.
During World War II it was destroyed many times. The final decision to dismantle it was made in 1949, and thus in 1952 two spans were delivered to Ploski and replaced the old wooden crossing over the Narew River.
The remaining elements of the Fordon Bridge are:
• 2 spans in Brzeg nad Odrą
• 1 span is in Czarnków on the Noteć River
• 3 spans in Dorohusk on the Bug River
• 3 spans in Jarosław on the San River
• 2 in Zosina on the Bug River
The bridge was entered into the register of monuments on March 25, 2022.

The church belongs to a small group of post-uniate temples built on an octagonal plan, located in the vicinity of Bielsk Podlaski and Orla. Despite repeated extensions, it has retained the eighteenth-century form of the nave and the lower part of the bell tower.

The historic wooden Orthodox church of St. Michael the Archangel in Orla, built in 1794, is one of the oldest fully preserved wooden Orthodox churches in Podlasie. Between 1979 and 1981, due to its poor technical condition, it was completely dismantled and then rebuilt on reinforced foundations, while preserving the original furnishings of the church, the iconostasis, and the icon of the Mother of God from the turn of the 17th/18th century.

It was probably built in the 1770s, when Orla belonged to the Branicki family. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, side narthexes were added to the temple building. During World War I, a field hospital was set up in the synagogue; during this time, a wooden ceiling was installed, dividing the main hall into two floors. After the war, the building served a religious purpose. In 1935, it was rebuilt after a fire that destroyed it in 1928. During World War II, in 1941, the building was devastated by the Germans and converted into a warehouse. After the war, the narthexes were dismantled, and the building continued to serve as a warehouse, renovated in the 1980s to its mid-19th century state, the facades were renewed and the narthexes rebuilt, since 2012 it has been under the care of the Foundation for the Protection of Jewish Heritage. https://zabytek.pl/pl/obiekty/orla-synagoga

The Orthodox parish church in Bielsk Podlaski is located in the city center, at 36 Adama Mickiewicza Street. Built before 1789, it features a log structure with timber cladding (the octagonal nave dates from this period). In 1914, a square porch with a bell tower was added. The altar section was then added in 1989. At the rear of the church is a baptistery designed by Jerzy Nowosielski, while on the adjacent property is a parish house with a domestic chapel – the Baptistery of St. John the Baptist.

Bielsk Podlaski Town Hall – the building was built between 1776 and 1780 in the late Baroque style, designed by Jan Sękowski, the Branicki family's court architect. Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt three times: in the first half of the 19th century, before 1920, and in 1942. It currently houses the Bielsk Podlaski Museum.
