The history of the church in Alt Schalkowitz in the municipality of Poppelau dates back to the 16th century, when according to tradition, a wooden church stood at this location. In 1822, the wooden church was destroyed by a major fire in Schalkowitz. The current architectural form of the church dates from 1825-1830. Unfortunately, no documents have survived that identify the architect of the new church.
