The church was built in 1823 thanks to funds from the Puttkamer family, from which Otto von Bismarck's wife, Joanna, came from. The couple married here. On December 6, 2001, the choir and roof of the church were destroyed by fire. The rebuilt church features marble statues and a sculpture of Christ made from an 800-year-old olive tree from Sicily.
