It felt like 100 smaller and larger waterfalls all along the gorge! Simply a great natural spectacle 👍

The path through the Gauchach Gorge is especially not recommended for people with even a slight fear of heights! I myself had no problem with that, but my hiking companion had to go beyond its limits. The path is sometimes very narrow, slippery and muddy, there are no steel "retaining fences" like in the Wutach Gorge. Absolute surefootedness, good physical condition and good shoes are a real MUST here! It becomes particularly problematic when a hiker comes towards you and you have to pass each other. I would classify the section as difficult depending on the weather conditions. Still a real highlight for me and highly recommended for advanced hikers (sticks are helpful !!); you are in a real jungle with a breathtaking view into the depths of the Gauchach!

This stair waterfall is striking and yet quite large for such a small stream. Very nice photo motif.

Löffingen is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes. The Wutach Gorge, often called the "Grand Canyon of the Black Forest Highlands," offers untouched nature and dramatic landscapes. Equally impressive is the Gauchach Gorge, known for its primeval forests and romantic waterfalls. You can also visit the Gauchach Waterfall within the gorge. For a different natural experience, the eastern shore of Schluchsee, the largest lake in the Hochschwarzwald, is easily accessible for scenic views and walks.
Yes, Löffingen offers family-friendly entertainment. Tatzmania Löffingen Zoo & Leisure Park is a major highlight, featuring numerous wild animals and various rides for action and fun. The Black Forest Park, which encompasses Tatzmania, also provides natural habitats for animals like yaks and wolves, along with falconry exhibitions.
Löffingen boasts a rich history. Explore the Historic Town Center with its colorful buildings and the Maienländer Gate, one of the original historical gates. The Heimatmuseum (Local History Museum) offers a journey through the town's past, showcasing geological and prehistoric exhibits, including fossils from the Wutach Gorge and medieval items. You can also visit the Witterschnee Pilgrimage Church and the Town Parish Church.

Löffingen offers attractions year-round. Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking in the gorges, with pleasant temperatures and vibrant foliage. Summer allows for enjoying the lakes and outdoor activities, though the Wutach can sometimes dry up superficially in parts of the gorge. In winter, the district of Dittishausen provides cross-country ski trails and a sledding slope for snow enthusiasts.
The Wutach Gorge is generally dog-friendly, but it's crucial to keep dogs on a leash due to the nature reserve status, wildlife, and narrow, sometimes challenging paths. Always be mindful of other hikers and the environment.
Beyond the gorges themselves, the Kanadiersteg (Covered Bridge at the Confluence of Gauchach and Wutach) offers a unique viewpoint where the Gauchach meets the Wutach. The bridge itself is a historical point of interest, built by Canadian pioneers. The gorges are also geological wonders, with features like karst formations and fossils.
While the gorges are well-known, the Herbal Nature Trail (Heilkräuter Lehrpfad) offers a quieter, educational experience about local herbs. The Vaulted Cheese Cellar (Gewölbekäsekeller) provides a unique glimpse into local culinary traditions. Exploring the side streets of the Historic Town Center can also reveal charming, less-trafficked spots.
As a nature reserve, visitors to the Wutach Gorge should stay on marked paths, refrain from disturbing wildlife, and take all litter with them. Good footwear is essential due to the rugged terrain. During periods of heavy rain, paths can become very slippery, and some sections might be temporarily closed for safety. Always check local conditions before your visit.
While the gorges involve challenging terrain, some areas around the Schluchsee east shore offer more accessible promenades with expansive views. The Historic Town Center of Löffingen is generally walkable, though some older streets may have uneven surfaces. Tatzmania Löffingen Zoo & Leisure Park may also offer more accessible pathways within its grounds; it's advisable to check their specific accessibility information directly.
