Ruins of the Józef Ironworks in Samsonów

Highlight • Historical Site

Samsonov's industrial traditions are very ancient. In 1598, the first bergam-type blast furnace in Poland was built here. The furnace designer was Hieronymus Caccio, a specialist from Italy. In the years 1641-44 the furnace was rebuilt and the first liquid pig iron was obtained. The present steel plant was founded on the initiative of Stanisław Staszic in the years 1818-1823. Over the following years, it was expanded and rebuilt. In the years 1821-1822, a blast furnace block, a hoisting tower, a machine hall and a casting hall were built next to the blast furnace. In 1829, as part of technical improvements, a cylindrical bellows moved by a water wheel and a steam engine were installed. The side, north and south wings were built around 1835. In 1844, 1848 and 1866 there were serious fires in the building. The last of them caused that Huta fell into ruin and was closed. "Huta Józef" worked mainly for the needs of the army. In addition, a number of construction and decorative elements were produced there. In 1967, the "Huta Jozefa" blast furnace complex was entered into the register of monuments. In the years 1981-1983, the remaining metallurgical buildings were preserved in the form of a permanent ruin and made available to visitors.

The reserve was established in 1959 to preserve peculiar rock forms. The rocks in question were carved thanks to erosive processes in the Triassic and Lower Jurassic sandstones. Thanks to this, they stand out beautifully with yellow and orange, but also with a dark color against the green of the forest. At a length of several hundred meters, the rocks form two separate clusters. Following the blue trail from the parking lot, first we reach lower and darker rock formations, then we reach more colorful and magnificent, up to 8 m high inselbergs. These are rocks with extremely unusual shapes, such as mushrooms, chimneys, pulpits (pulpit), or… what your imagination will tell you.

The ruins of the blast furnace plant in Bobrza were part of Stanisław Staszic's plan to industrialise the Kingdom of Poland, the plant was to house five furnaces with an unprecedented height of about 18 m. The entire plant was surrounded by a gigantic retaining wall 500 m long and 5 m wide at its thickest point. The construction of the plant was never completed, it was interrupted, among others, by the November Uprising of 1830.

The place is also on the list of tourist badges:

August 16, 2024, Bartek Oak

"Bartek Oak" grows on the Ćmińsk - Samsonów - Barcza road. The oak has been a natural monument since 1954. Dendrologists estimate that the oak is over 700 years old. The tree is about 30 meters high, the trunk circumference is almost 10 meters. The crown span is 20x40 meters. On the side opposite the road, the oak is devoid of branches, this is the result of necrosis that affected the tree after the fire in 1906. By the oak there is a chapel dedicated to St. Hubert, as well as information boards and a roofed shelter.
