Great views of Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul. However, a more beautiful view is located a little away from the crowds. Additional parking is available just below the viewpoint.

The middle third of the trail is quite challenging and only recommended in dry weather. It's definitely not a leisurely stroll; it's a bit adventurous with ropes and slippery, steep steps, but doable.

An impossible path! We were there today. The weather was dry, and so were the paths. We had planned a walk around the lake, as both sides have beautiful trails. We started on the eastern side; the path narrowed, and suddenly trees lay across it. The crossing was easy; the path certainly looked like it had been used often, and the obstacles piled up. Sometimes up, then down to the waterline (the water level was very high), and over and under trees. Since we're pretty good at navigating the mountains, it was an adventure. About 90 minutes long. As I wrote, it was supposed to be a walk. Hiking poles and boots were in the trunk. Would have been helpful. But there are no signs or barriers. If you dare, when the paths are dry(!), continue. Everyone else should turn back at the first obstacle.

Anyone with decent hiking boots and a bit of fitness and surefootedness will get their money's worth here. There were three other groups on the tour with us, all of whom were a bit dirty at the end but enjoyed the adventure. Another group came towards us, which had gone the other way. You have to assess your abilities correctly.

We "hiked" the route yesterday. What was supposed to be an easy hike turned into an extremely dangerous one. We didn't see any closures. Some of the paths have collapsed, fallen trees have to be climbed, etc. Conclusion: not recommended at all

The climb leads through a beautiful jungle section. Very slippery when it rains. When you're almost at the top, the recommended path leads to the right into the bushes. After half an hour it ends. Be sure to continue straight on the other hiking trail.

Pilar Da Bretanha is rich in natural beauty, offering several stunning viewpoints and unique lakes. You can visit the iconic Vista do Rei viewpoint for breathtaking panoramic views of Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde. Another excellent spot is Miradouro das "Cumeeiras," which also provides majestic views of the Sete Cidades lagoons. Don't miss Mares' Peak, the highest point in the west of São Miguel, offering expansive vistas.
Absolutely. The most famous are Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, two distinct lakes nestled within a volcanic crater. Lagoa Azul appears blue due to the reflection of the sky, while Lagoa Verde takes on a green hue from the surrounding vegetation. You can observe their unique colors from various viewpoints. Additionally, Lake Canário is a small, picturesque lake often used as a starting point for walks around the Caldeira.
Pilar Da Bretanha has a rich history reflected in its religious sites and landmarks. The Igreja Paroquial de Pilar da Bretanha (Church of Nossa Senhora do Pilar), dating back to the 17th century, features distinctive dark basalt stone craftsmanship. São João Square, restored in the early 2000s, includes the Holy Spirit Chapel and decorative fountains. The Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Boa Nova is another religious site of historical significance.
For unparalleled panoramic views of the Sete Cidades lagoons, the Vista do Rei viewpoint is a must-visit. Its name, meaning 'King's View,' comes from a royal visit in 1901. Another equally stunning location is Miradouro das "Cumeeiras," which offers majestic perspectives of the twin lakes and the surrounding volcanic landscape.
The Monte Palace Hotel is a fascinating 'lost place' near Pilar Da Bretanha. This former exclusive 5-star hotel operated for only 19 months between 1989 and 1990. Despite its luxurious design, it failed to attract enough tourists, possibly due to frequent rain and fog. It was guarded for 20 years before being abandoned in 2010. Today, it's a popular spot for those interested in exploring decaying structures, offering great views from its roof.
