Brandenburg Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The Brandenburg consists of two plants: the Westburg and the Ostburg. The castles were always in the possession of competing aristocratic families or rulers. In the 13th century, when the castles were built, was an important trade route under the castle hill and the owners of the two castles could secure this and at the same time control. In the 16th century lost this way in importance and the two castles were abandoned. The already ruined ruin was awakened from its slumber only with the advent of tourism in the late 19th century. Rehabilitation works were interrupted by the Second World War. After the war, the castle was located in the border area and the GDR leadership had it fenced. Thus, a unique biotope could develop on the silent castle ruins. When the castle was to be rebuilt after the fall, it was partly due to rare animal and plant species under protection.

Today the castle can be visited and in the castle museum you can immerse yourself completely in the history of the castle and the Middle Ages. The castle ruins are open every day of the year.

April 3, 2025, Brandenburg Castle Ruins

The Brandenburg Castle ruins tower impressively above the Werra Valley. We saw them several times from the Werra Castle Trail and eventually visited them. The view from up here is magnificent!

The round is very beautiful. Above all, the path is not difficult and is very well signposted. And also suitable for “hiking beginners” because there are hardly any inclines
