Pilsko Peak

Highlight • Summit

Pilsko (1,557 m above sea level) is the second highest peak in the Żywiec Beskids, known for its vast panoramas of the Tatras, Mala Fatra and Babia Góra. There are several trails leading to the peak, including from Korbielów, Sopotnia Wielka and Złatna, with the approach from the Polish side being steep but rewarding. In winter, there is a ski resort here, while in summer, Pilsko attracts tourists who appreciate the wilderness and mountain climate. The peak lies on the border between Poland and Slovakia, and on the Slovak side, you can find a shelter at Hala Miziowa. It is worth taking a supply of water and appropriate footwear, because the approach can be muddy.

There are towns in Slovakia that offer nice views but… not much more than that. But there's a reason. Námestovo, although funded in the 16th century, doesn't have much more than the old church; some 60% of the town was destroyed during the WW2 campaign. A great part of the old town disappeared under the waters of Orava Reservoir.
Apart from the church and the attractions of the Lake, there is one curiosity - the old Jewish cemetery right by the waters of the lake. This once significant community was persecuted from 1918 on and gone during the WW2. On the other hand, local people gave shelter to many refugees, many of them could work at the construction of the dam.

black route up is quite demanding. it's a steep hike about 20-30 minutes. if you are not on a good fitness level its better to choose yellow route

This place is worth a stop and a photo of the Slanický Ostrov Island with Babia Góra on the horizon. On the island, you can see a church. How did it happen to build a church in the middle of a lake… well, the church is the last remain of a village Slanica. It was built as the churches in towns here were usually built, on the top of a hill which. It turned into an island after the construction of the Orava reservoir. It was desacralized and nowadays houses an exposition of wooden sculptures and a gallery of photos of villages that were covered with the waters of the lake. The interior of the church was taken to a Museum in Dolný Kubin. Around the church, an interesting “cemetery” was constructed: some low relieves and tombstones from the villages were composed in stone blocks. There are ferries to the island during the summer season (and not many…).
Orava Lake - with an area of some 35 square km it is the biggest in area (but not in capacity) artificial lake in Slovakia. It was built near a place where White and Black Orava rivers met, in a narrow passage between Uhlisko and Krivina mountains. It was created to protect the lower situated lands from the floods that had regularly occurred, as both Oravas are mountain rivers. The construction started in 1941 and was finished 14 years later. Several villages disappeared underwater and two islands were created. This lake is not as popular as Liptov Lake nor as the much smaller Czorsztyn Lake in Poland; somehow it’s not very known by the Polish who form the biggest tourist group here. On the other hand, you can find many places where you can sit down by the lake, relax, not bothered by a presence of other tourists.

A resting place before or after climbing Babia Góra. From Przełęcz, you can also hike to Cyl (Little Babia Góra), which is less than 30 minutes away.

September 14, 2025, Mała Babia Góra

When ascending or descending from or to Babia Góra, it is worth taking the green trail to Mała Babia Góra at the Borna Pass. The route takes about 30 minutes to the top, it is a slight ascent, but the views of Babia Góra and Pilsko are great.

Watch out for the Slovak section from Medralowa downwards, there are a lot of broken and cut trees which are sometimes difficult to get around, info from 01/05/2025. The path is in poor condition, in the summer it is so overgrown that it is even difficult to find it.
