• During excavations on the island, as many as 124 graves dating from the 9th to the 11th century were discovered. Skeletons of the former inhabitants of these lands buried with jewelry and coins were found in them. For a long time, it was a mystery why such a small island served as a mass cemetery and how the deceased were transported to such a limited space.

Although the lake lies at the foot of Alpine glaciers, the water is not icy at all – in summer, its temperature reaches up to 25°C! This is all thanks to active thermal springs hidden in tectonic faults under the bottom of the eastern part of the lake. This warm water is actually pumped directly into the pools of the luxury hotels you pass while cycling along the shore.

Do this hike counter clockwise minimizing the slippery rocks on the down hill, taking the long staircase down and enjoying the Castke in your views downhill.

Beautiful hike on wooden walkways over the water along the gorge. Entry only with online ticket and timeslot at www.vintgar.si No bicycles in the gorge, they can be parked at the entrance. Plan for a round hike of approx. 2-3 hours.

On the site, some comments indicated a passage fee (currently €15), but it should be specified that you also have to book online to enter the gorges. As we are in the middle of summer, we arrived at 2 p.m., fully booked and the next available slots were only the following day at noon. So, not cool to have made the approach for nothing.
