Planica is a district of Rateče and the name of a valley in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, extending south from Rateče, not far from the famous winter sports resort of Kranjska Gora. It is known as a host of the Ski Flying World Championships. Further south in the valley lies Tamar, which can be reached in a 45-minute hike from the Planica parking lot at the end of the ski jumps and serves as a starting point for mountain hikes in Triglav National Park.

Annahütte stands on the Austrian–Slovenian border, nestled in the Karawanks (Karavanke) mountain range—a dramatic natural frontier that has long marked the intersection of Germanic and Slavic Europe. Perched on this historic ridge, the hut has borne witness to a century of shifting borders, cultural tensions, and hard-won peace. During World War II, the Karawanks were militarized. The area surrounding Annahütte became a landscape of surveillance and resistance, marked by German Wehrmacht patrols and partisan activity. After 1945, the onset of the Cold War and the formation of the Iron Curtain transformed the Austrian–Yugoslav border into a tightly controlled divide. Annahütte, once a waypoint in the mountains, was never restored. With Slovenia’s independence in 1991, its accession to the European Union in 2004, the border softened—giving way to a new era of cross-border cooperation. The Karawanks, once a symbol of division, began to host cultural festivals, heritage walks, and renewed hiking routes that transcended national lines. Though still in ruins, Annahütte has come to embody a powerful legacy: a place of shared memory, historical reflection, and intercultural dialogue. Today, efforts are underway to rebuild the hut—not simply as a shelter, but as a symbol. Restoring Annahütte means honoring its role in the region’s story: a quiet but enduring testament to reconciliation, unity, and the human capacity to overcome borders.

The pass road was built in 1915-1916 as a military road for Austria-Hungary by Russian prisoners of war. Over 400 of them died in an avalanche in March 1916 alone. On the north side, at about 1200 m above sea level, the Russian chapel built by these Russians commemorates the victims. The road was opened in the second half of 1915 and named Archduke Eugene Road. A large part of the supplies for the major offensive by Austria-Hungary and Germany were transported along this road.

This is not a small shelter but a bivouac box for alpine emergencies, not a stopover to be planned or even an overnight accommodation.

There are chairs/deckchairs around and you can sit without ordering (certainly if they have a full place it would be better to avoid 😅)
