Very beautiful and isolated mountain peak in the White Mountains. The view of the Sierra Nevada and towards Death Valley is great. The climb is not particularly difficult, there are no climbing sections or anything similar. However, due to the length of the tour and the altitude, it should not be underestimated.

you need to know that this is quite challenging , climbing from 11,000 feet at the start to 14,200 feet over six and a half miles of rough, rocky terrain which is often very cold and windy with no shelter, being totally above treeline. DSC 04/27/2024

The way up to the peak of White Mountain is a challenging one, due to the elevation gain and length. However, the 360 degree view from the top is worth the effort. The road up is also rideable on a bike, so there is a chance you may share the road with cyclists, so make sure you watch out for other trail users.

At Schulman Grove, the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest Visitor Center is open in summer, with interpretive programs, gifts, and information about the trees. Bristlecone trees can be viewed from the parking area and boardwalks around the visitor center. Further exploration of the forest may be done via 3 self-guided trails. fs.usda.gov/recarea/inyo/recreation/hiking/recarea/?recid=70821&actid=50

The Schulman Grove Visitor Center is open only during the summer and provides exhibits about the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Trees, the oldest trees on Earth. The center has restrooms but does not offer a water fountain or spigot. However, bottled water is available for sale in the bookstore."

The White Mountain Wilderness boundary is actually on both sides of the road to leave a corridor where biking to the summit is legal. Normally in Wilderness areas no mechanical travel is permitted, including biking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the White Mountains Wilderness in California the same as the one in New Hampshire?

No, they are two different locations. This guide focuses on the White Mountains Wilderness in California's Inyo National Forest, a high-altitude desert range. The White Mountain National Forest is a separate, popular hiking area in New Hampshire.

What is the best time of year to hike in the White Mountains Wilderness?

The best time to hike is typically from late spring to early fall (June through September). Due to the high elevation, snow can linger into the summer months, and winter conditions are harsh and generally unsuitable for hiking. Always check weather and road conditions before you go, as access can be limited.

Are hiking permits required for the White Mountains Wilderness?

For day hikes, a permit is generally not required. However, if you plan on backpacking and camping overnight, a California Campfire Permit is needed for using stoves. For the most current regulations, it's always best to check with the Inyo National Forest visitor center before your trip.

How difficult are the hikes in this region?

Hikes in the White Mountains Wilderness are generally challenging due to the high altitude and rugged, often unmaintained trails. The primary difficulty for most visitors is acclimatizing to the elevation, which can make even moderate distances feel strenuous. It's a region best suited for experienced hikers prepared for remote conditions.

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes available?

Yes, while the region is known for its tough climbs, there are accessible options. The Cabin loop from Bishop is a shorter, easier trail at lower elevations. Additionally, the trails within the Schulman Grove of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, such as the 1-mile Discovery Trail, are great for families and those adjusting to the altitude.

Can I bring my dog on the trails?

Dogs are generally permitted on trails within the Inyo National Forest, but they must be under voice control or on a leash. However, they are not allowed in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest's Schulman Grove and Methuselah Grove trail systems to protect the fragile ecosystem. Always carry enough water for your pet, as natural sources are scarce.

What makes hiking here different from the nearby Sierra Nevada?

The White Mountains offer a distinctly different experience. They are a high-altitude desert range, making them much drier and more sparsely vegetated than the Sierra Nevada. This results in a profound sense of solitude and stark, expansive views. The geology is also different, characterized by ancient bristlecone pines and white dolomite rock, rather than the granite landscape of the Sierras.

Are there good options for backpacking loops?

The White Mountains Wilderness is excellent for backpacking, offering solitude and a true backcountry experience. While there are few formally marked loops, experienced hikers can create their own routes by connecting non-maintained trails and old 4WD roads. The Boundary Peak loop from Kennedy Point offers a challenging multi-day trek for well-prepared backpackers.

Where can I see the ancient bristlecone pines?

The best place to see these ancient trees is the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, located within the wilderness area. You can explore the Methuselah Walk Loop โ€” Inyo National Forest, a moderate trail that takes you through a grove containing some of the oldest living trees on Earth. For more visitor information, you can check the Bishop Visitor Center website.

How should I prepare for a high-altitude hike like White Mountain Peak?

Acclimatization is key. Spend at least one or two nights at a high elevation, like at Grandview Campground (8,600 ft), before attempting a major summit. Carry plenty of water (at least 4-5 liters per person), high-energy snacks, and layers of clothing, as weather can change rapidly. The White Mountain Hike Loop โ€” White Mountain Wilderness is a very strenuous, full-day effort that should only be undertaken if you are well-prepared for the altitude and distance.

Is there reliable water on the trails?

No, water is extremely scarce in the White Mountains. It is a desert range, and you should not rely on finding natural water sources along the trails. You must carry all the water you will need for your entire hike. For long day hikes or backpacking trips, this means carrying several liters per person.

What do other hikers enjoy most about the White Mountains Wilderness?

The area is highly rated by the komoot community. Reviewers often praise the incredible sense of solitude and the vast, dramatic landscapes. The unique experience of walking among the ancient bristlecone pines and the rewarding challenge of the high-altitude peaks are frequently mentioned as major highlights.
