The lake is a remnant of glacial Lake Oshkosh. In the High Cliffs State Park is the Niagara Escarpment, rocks that resisted glacier erosion. The name of the lake comes from the nickname, "Winnebago," which was given to the people living in this area, the Ho-Chunk. It meant "stinking water people," this is because the lake smells strongly of fish in summer.
