The 314 meter long bridge was built between 1875 and 1878 with the construction of the Moselle line from Koblenz to Trier as part of the cannon railway. Initially it was planned purely as a railway bridge. After the surrounding communities and the district as well as entrepreneurs contributed financially, the Prussian government approved the construction of a double-decker bridge for rail and road. As a cyclist you usually have to pay close attention at the bridge because it is very busy. Cyclists also mostly ride on the road because the bridge is too narrow on the sides.
