Volunteer Park Water Tower

Highlight • Monument

To this day, Seattle benefits immensely from the park and street system that the landscape architect brothers Olmsted designed from around 1903 onwards. The rural and almost romantic-looking districts on the Lake Washington side go back to these plans, which idealize the American landscape. Volunteer Park on scenic Capitol Hill is the central green space, a landscaped city park. The water tower at the highest point is open to the public. From the viewing platform you have a wonderful view over the city, the sound and the lakes, along with some information boards about the grandiose green planning of the Olmsteds. Urban planning was once so progressive in the USA.

This is the better bridge to cross Lake Washington. Nice wide cycle/pedestrian path, multiple pullouts that allow you to stop and take in the sights to the North, and a glorious view from the East end of the bridge towards Seattle to the West. Once the Montlake interchange is complete, access to University of Washington will be excellent.

Wilburton Hill Park has an old forest of tall timbers. You don't need a compass for navigation - just look at the moss on the tree trunks

This is the best path between Lake Washington and the Cross-Kirkland Corridor.

It's a fun ride around the park and into Lake Washington. On a clear day, look to the South for views of Mt. Rainier. The trail narrows on the East side - careful for pedestrians wandering zombie-like as they gaze out at the lake. Frequent use of your bicycle bell is highly recommended.

Great suspension bridge that leads over a small but deep gorge.
