For experienced mountain hikers, it is a great ascent in the Gamsluck'n, mostly on all fours, with fantastic views from the summit to the Totes Gebirge, Dachstein massif, and Höllengebirge.....

Great view of the Traunstein and the surrounding area. If you walk quickly, you can reach the summit in 1 hour. The path from the summit to the right further down is partly overgrown but recognizable (waterproof shoes are an advantage if you are out and about in the morning...wet, tall grass)

The views from the bike path are wonderful. It's just a shame that the majority of the cycle path runs along the main road. There's a lot of traffic, noise and smell.

Traunkirchen is old settlement land. We know from finds that people lived here in the Younger Stone Age, as well as in the Bronze and Hallstatt Ages. A test excavation on the Johannesberg in 1979 revealed reliable evidence that there was a pagan cult site there 3,500 years ago. The Johannesberg Chapel bears the inscription “Once the hideout of pagan pirates, now dedicated to (the) Saint John the Baptist”. This and the picture of the founding of the Traunkirchen monastery in today's rectory, which shows a battle and the overthrow of idol statues in the background, point to conflict-ridden times of the past.[1] The church lords probably didn't have an easy time here, probably also in connection with the salt-rich upper Trauntal, which was separated from Traunstein and Sonnstein. As can be read in a document from 909 AD, King Ludwig transferred the “Trunseo” abbey into the possession of the Salzburg Archbishop Pilgrim I and a Count Aribo, who had acquired properties in Styria in 904. The Traunkirchen monastery was founded around 1020 and is considered the successor to this abbey. Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the town of Traunkirchen has belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been attributed to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns. During the Napoleonic Wars the place was occupied several times. It has been part of the federal state of Upper Austria since 1918. After Austria was annexed to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, Traunkirchen was part of the Upper Danube district. After 1945, Upper Austria was restored, first as an American occupation zone, and in 1955 in free and restored Austria. The lion monument on the Traunkirchner Ufer was opened to the public in 1861 on the occasion of the completion of the road between Gmunden and Ebensee. It was destroyed by a bomb attack on September 23, 1963 and rebuilt the following year. Other assassination targets on the same day were the saltworks and the Feuerkogel cable car in neighboring Ebensee. The attacks can be attributed to Italian extremists in the course of the South Tyrol conflict at the time (Wikipedia).
