Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes in the Tracy City area?

Yes, the region has several options suitable for families and beginners. The Grundy State Forest loop from Tracy City is a great choice, offering a relatively flat 3.1-mile (5 km) walk. Another excellent option is the trail around Grundy Lakes, which is an easy 2.3-mile path that also features historic coke ovens from the area's coal mining past.

Which trails feature waterfalls?

Many trails around Tracy City lead to stunning waterfalls. The Foster Falls via Climbers Loop Trail takes you to the base of the park's tallest waterfall, the 60-foot Foster Falls. For multiple cascades, the Grundy Forest area is fantastic, with trails passing Blue Hole Falls and other smaller waterfalls along the Fiery Gizzard Creek.

Can I bring my dog on the trails?

Dogs are generally permitted on trails within South Cumberland State Park, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Be aware that some sections, particularly on the Fiery Gizzard Trail, are very rocky and may be challenging for some dogs. Always check specific park regulations before you go and ensure you bring enough water for your pet.

Are there any circular or loop hikes available?

Yes, there are several popular loop trails. The Raven Point via Fiery Gizzard & Dog Hole Trail loop is a rewarding 8.4-mile (13.6 km) moderate hike. For a longer, more challenging day, the Grundy State Forest loop from Sycamore Falls covers 5.8 miles (9.3 km) through beautiful woodland scenery.

What is the best time of year to hike around Tracy City?

Hiking is possible year-round, but spring and fall offer the most pleasant experience. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and full-flowing waterfalls. Autumn provides cooler temperatures and spectacular fall foliage. Summers can be hot and humid, so start early and bring plenty of water. Winter is the quietest season, offering a different kind of beauty, but be prepared for colder conditions and potentially icy patches on the trails.

How difficult is the Fiery Gizzard Trail?

The Fiery Gizzard Trail is renowned for being one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes in the region. The full 12.7-mile one-way trail is considered difficult due to its extremely rocky and rugged terrain, with significant elevation changes. Shorter sections, like the Grundy Forest Day Loop at the northern end, are much easier and offer a taste of the gorge's beauty without the strenuous commitment.

Are there places to swim along the hiking trails?

Yes, several trails feature popular swimming holes, which are perfect for cooling off on a warm day. Blue Hole Falls, located near the Grundy Forest trailhead, is a well-known spot. The base of Foster Falls also has a large plunge pool that is a favorite among hikers. Always exercise caution when swimming in natural water bodies.

What should I pack for a day hike in this area?

For any hike, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential due to the rocky and often slippery terrain. You should also carry plenty of water, especially in summer, as well as snacks or a packed lunch. A map of the trail, a first-aid kit, and insect repellent are also highly recommended. If you're hiking in the cooler months, dress in layers.

Where is the best place to park for hiking?

Parking depends on the trail you choose. For the northern section of the Fiery Gizzard Trail and Grundy Forest, the Grundy Forest State Natural Area trailhead is the primary access point. For the southern end and Foster Falls, you'll use the parking area at the Fiery Gizzard South Trailhead. Both are popular, so arriving early on weekends is a good idea.

What are some of the historical features I can see while hiking?

The trails around Tracy City are rich with history from the area's coal mining past. The Grundy Lakes area features a series of historic coke ovens, which were used to convert coal into industrial coke. Additionally, the Mountain Goat Trail follows the path of the historic Mountain Goat Railroad, which once transported coal and passengers over the plateau.
