We hiked to the chapel in August 2025. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially for the last few meters to the chapel. We were well-equipped, so it wasn't a problem for us. Once you reach the destination, you're rewarded with a magnificent view. Sunscreen and plenty of water are essential in Crete—especially in summer.

Great hike with a wonderful view from the mountain village of Zia to the summit with a beautiful chapel below. The trail has an alpine character in places, so it's better to wear sturdy shoes and plan enough time (3-4 hours) as well as enough water (there are no springs etc.) and if necessary, take a jacket etc. in the off-season (cold wind up there)! Have fun 😊

Great mountain hike with fantastic views. Everything can be easily reached by bus from Kos town.

At 846 m, Dikeos is the highest mountain on Kos. The starting point is the small mountain village of Zia, from which it takes around two hours to get to the summit (around 4 km and 500 meters in altitude). The path is partly signposted. Just below the summit is the Dikeos Christos chapel.

The climb to Crete's highest mountain is certainly one of the highlights of a holiday on the island. The shortest and best route starts at the Mygero Refuge (an investment ruin, a shame). At the beginning the path is clearly visible (paved), later it becomes more confusing. You should plan on 5 - 6 hours for the journey there and back, there is an altitude difference of around 850 meters. Sufficient water and weatherproof clothing are a given. But the mountain is also a real eye-catcher from a distance. Before you start the climb, get weather information. A dream route with sun and little wind.

The Afendis Christos (second highest peak on the Juchtas) with the church of the same name is a nice excursion destination. The view over half of Crete is impressive. Unfortunately, the many transmission masts again spoil the overall impression. And since you can drive almost up to the top by car, you are rarely alone here.

It's worth the steep climb just for the views along the coast and the island.

There may be a lot of chapels on Santorini, but each one is special in its own way. Perched on the summit of Profitis Ilias mountain in Santorini, this chapel is a tranquil retreat on a hike. It boasts breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and Santorini's stunning landscapes. The chapel's blue dome and whitewashed walls are emblematic of the island's architecture.

Greece's mountains are steeped in mythology. Mount Olympus, the highest peak, is famously known as the home of the Greek gods. Mount Parnassus is revered as the domain of Apollo and the Muses, while Mount Psiloritis (also known as Ida) on Crete is believed to be where Zeus was hidden and raised. You can explore the summit of Psiloritis at Psiloritis (Timios Stavros) Summit.
While many peaks offer challenging climbs, some areas provide more accessible options. For instance, the region around Mount Tymfi in Epirus, with its charming stone villages and the Vikos-Aoos National Park, can offer varied experiences. On Naxos, the hike to Mount Zas Summit (Naxos) is described as a nice little mountain tour for almost everyone, especially if you plan the round trip via the Cave of Zas.
For advanced mountaineers, the ascent to Mytikas, the highest peak of Mount Olympus at 2,917 meters, offers a challenging two to three-day trekking experience. Another demanding option is the climb to Psiloritis (Timios Stavros) Summit on Crete, which is a difficult climb of just under 5km/900m. The White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in western Crete also present challenging terrain with numerous peaks over 2,000 meters.
Greece's mountains boast diverse natural beauty. Mount Olympus is a UNESCO-protected biosphere reserve with rugged cliffs, deep gorges like Enipeas, alpine valleys, and lush forests, home to varied flora and fauna. Mount Smolikas and Mount Tymfi feature stunning alpine lakes like Drakolimni. Mount Parnassus is known for its oak and fir forests and the rare Parnassius Apollo butterfly. Mount Psiloritis on Crete is an ecological treasure with diverse endemic species.
The best time to hike in the Greek mountains generally depends on the specific peak and your activity. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant landscapes, ideal for most treks. For higher peaks like Mount Olympus, summer is popular, though weather can change quickly. Winter brings snow, making areas like Mount Parnassus a popular destination for skiing, but requiring specialized gear and experience for hiking.
Yes, many Greek mountains are intertwined with history and religion. Near Mount Olympus, you can find the archaeological park of Dion. Mount Parnassus is close to the ancient ruins of Delphi and the Temple of Apollo. On Rhodes, you can visit Tsambika Monastery, located on a beautiful peak, and the Pantokrator Monastery on Corfu. The Prophet Elias Chapel (Profitis Ilias) is also a significant site on Santorini.
Beyond hiking and mountaineering, the regions around Greece's mountain peaks offer various outdoor activities. You can find numerous road cycling routes, such as those in the guide Road Cycling Routes in Greece. There are also running trails available, detailed in the guide Running Trails in Greece. For more specific mountain hikes, explore the guide Mountain Hikes in Greece, which includes routes like the Mount Dikeos Summit and Church loop.
Many Greek peaks are renowned for their extensive views. The Summit of Mount Dikeos on Kos offers great mountain hiking with extensive views. From Mount Zas Summit (Naxos), the view is amazing, and there's even a summit book. The Taygetos mountain range in the Peloponnese provides phenomenal views of the coast, while the White Mountains in Crete offer breathtaking views of the Cretan and Libyan Seas.
The Taygetos mountain range, dominating the Peloponnese, offers dozens of kilometers of marked trails suitable for various skill levels. While it features steep cliffs, there are accessible sections for nature lovers to enjoy the dramatic scenery and views of the coast. For specific beginner-friendly routes, it's advisable to check local trail information.
The Pindus mountain range, often called the 'spine of Greece,' is a unique destination for its rugged beauty and traditional villages. Mount Smolikas, the second-highest mountain in Greece, is part of this range and features charming villages like Samarina and Smixi, along with the stunning alpine lake Drakolimni. The region around Mount Tymfi, also in the Pindus, is famous for the breathtaking Vikos Gorge and picturesque stone villages within the Vikos-Aoos National Park.
Visitors frequently highlight the stunning panoramic views, the sense of accomplishment from challenging climbs, and the rich historical and mythological context. For instance, the Summit of Mount Dikeos is praised for its fantastic views, and the Mount Zas Summit (Naxos) is noted for its amazing vistas. Many also appreciate the unique natural features like alpine lakes and diverse flora and fauna, as well as the authentic charm of rural villages.
Mount Giona, with its highest peak Pyramid at 2,510 meters, is the highest mountain in Central Greece. It is known for its rugged peaks and is situated between the Parnassus and Vardousia Mountains. Its relatively central location makes it a convenient destination for hiking from major cities, offering a good option for those looking for a challenging yet accessible mountain experience in the heart of the country.
