Sigmundskron Castle is located south of Bolzano, above the Adige River. The castle has changed hands and names several times over the centuries. Before Sigmundskron, the castle was called Firmian. The current owner, Reinhold Messner, also calls the castle ruins that, more precisely MMM Firmian (Messner Mountain Museum). The MMM is a project with six locations in Tyrol.

The section leads from Kaltern down to the Adige River near Bolzano. The ride descends through vineyards, deciduous forest, and two tunnels, winding along the slopes. This provides remarkable views, such as those of Simundskrona. The route partly follows secondary roads, where tractor traffic is permitted, so be careful. Purely enjoyable cycling on what is partly a former railway line.

Sigmundskron Castle sits enthroned on a rock at a strategically important location. It is a symbolic landmark for the South Tyroleans. On November 17, 1957, approximately 35,000 South Tyroleans from all valleys and regions gathered at Sigmundskron Castle. They protested for more rights. The castle has become a symbol of South Tyrol's autonomy. Reinhold Messner, who was born in Brixen in 1944, therefore shows a strong connection to this castle in his homeland.

Many castle taverns, like the one at Castel Boymont, are open during the summer, enhancing the experience. The vibrant frescoes of Castel Roncolo are also best enjoyed in good daylight.
Castel Roncolo, known as the 'Painted Castle,' houses the largest cycle of secular medieval frescoes in the world, depicting courtly life and legends. Sigmundskron Castle, now the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian, offers a unique perspective on the relationship between humans and mountains within a historic setting. Churburg Castle (Castel Coira) is renowned for its extensive collection of historical furniture and an impressive armory hall, providing a deep dive into medieval life.

Sigmundskron Castle, strategically located above the Adige River, provides remarkable panoramic views. Appiano Castle (Hocheppan Castle), a hiking destination, also offers beautiful vistas from its ruins. The Three Castles Trail is specifically noted for its wonderful views of the surrounding area from its various castle points.
Several castles feature on-site or nearby amenities. Appiano Castle (Hocheppan Castle) has a castle tavern serving South Tyrolean specialties. Trostburg Castle, while not having a tavern, is home to farm animals like goats and chickens, adding to its charm.
The duration of a visit can vary. For smaller castles or ruins like Castel Mareccio, an hour or two might suffice. For larger sites with museums or extensive grounds, such as Castel Roncolo or Sigmundskron Castle, plan for 2-3 hours to fully explore the art, exhibits, and views. If you're hiking to a castle like Appiano or Boymont, factor in the travel time for the hike itself.
While the region is rich with well-known castles, exploring some of the less prominent ones can offer a unique experience. Castel Rodengo, for instance, provides an entertaining and informative guided tour showcasing ancient wall paintings and 800-year-old Ywain frescoes. Trostburg Castle, inhabited by the same family for 600 years, offers a sense of continuous history and fabulous views, often with fewer crowds.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended, especially if you plan to explore castle grounds, climb towers, or hike to ruins like Appiano Castle or along the Three Castles Trail. Layered clothing is advisable as temperatures can change, particularly when moving between indoor and outdoor areas or at higher elevations. A light jacket might be useful even in warmer months.
Public transport options are available for many castles, though some might require a short walk from the nearest stop. Castel Roncolo is easily accessible by bus from Bolzano. For others, like Sigmundskron Castle, public transport might get you close, but checking local bus schedules and routes is recommended for specific destinations. Some castles, especially those in more remote hiking areas, are best reached by car or as part of a dedicated hike.
