After a short hike up the South Neahkahnie Mountain Trail, you will be rewarded with this view over the coastline. From here you can not only see Manzanita and its beach but hundreds of miles of pure beauty. There are two ways to reach the viewpoint: one from the south and one from the north, of which the northern route is a little longer and includes more altimeter.

Oregon state parks have excellent accommodations for hiker/biker camping, and Nehalem Bay is one of the best places to camp. Hiker/biker camping requires no reservations. It's affordable. Showers are included. Lockers at the campsite have USB-A chargers built in. You get to hear the soothing whooshing ocean waves all night. Walk out to the beach via a trail next to campsite B32. Once you hike over the dunes, you are greeted by a magnificent soft sandy beach that stretches for miles.

What are some easy, family-friendly hikes near Nehalem?

The Nehalem area offers several great options for families. The trails within Nehalem Bay State Park, such as the paved and gravel Nehalem Bay Loop Trail, are generally flat and suitable for all ages. Another excellent choice is the Elk Flats Trail to Short Sand Beach, which is a relatively short walk leading to a beautiful, secluded beach.

How difficult is the hike up Neahkahnie Mountain?

The difficulty depends on the trail you choose. The South Neahkahnie Mountain Trail is a shorter, more moderate ascent. Both routes feature rocky terrain and tree roots, rewarding hikers with stunning panoramic views from the top.

Are there any short, circular hiking routes available?

While many popular trails like the coastal paths are out-and-back, you can create loops. For example, the Nehalem Spit Trail can be combined with a walk back along the beach for a scenic loop with constant water views. Additionally, Nehalem Bay State Park features a 2-mile loop trail that is perfect for a quick and easy walk.

What kind of scenery can I expect on hikes around Nehalem?

The hiking experience is dominated by the stunning Oregon coast. Expect trails that wind through lush, old-growth coastal forests, open up to dramatic cliffside viewpoints over the Pacific, and lead to secluded sandy beaches. Hikes like the one to Short Sand Beach via Devil's Cauldron showcase this classic coastal scenery, from sheltered coves to rugged headlands.

Are there any waterfall hikes in the Nehalem area?

The primary focus of hiking in Nehalem is the spectacular coastal landscape, including forests, beaches, and ocean viewpoints, rather than waterfalls. While you may encounter small seasonal creeks, there are no major, named waterfall trails directly accessible from the main hiking areas like Oswald West or Nehalem Bay State Parks.

What should I know before hiking on the Oregon Coast?

The weather can change quickly, so it's wise to dress in layers and bring rain gear, even on a sunny day. Trails can be muddy, rocky, and have exposed tree roots, so sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes are recommended. Always carry water and check trail conditions before you head out, as some paths can be slippery, especially after rain.
