Lots of hills! But stop mid run at Coffee emporium before you run back to your car!

December 22, 2024, Ault Park Pavilion

Ault Park is the city's fourth-largest park and was established in 1911 through the generous land donation by Levi Addison Ault and his wife, Ida May Ault. This spot is the heart of Ault Park. There is a Italian Renaissance-style Pavilion, constructed in 1930 with a large fountain in front of it. This elegant structure serves as a popular venue for weddings, dances, and private events, and provides visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding Little Miami River valley. Adjacent to the pavilion are the park's gardens, which feature the renowned Adopt-A-Plot program initiated in 1980, where volunteers maintain individual garden plots, contributing to the park's vibrant floral displays.

Great viewpoint of the Ohio River and Kentucky from Woodland Mound Park. Sometimes you will see river barges bringing goods up and down the river.

For a larger, more expansive area, Minto-Brown Island Park offers nearly 30 miles of trails where leashed dogs are welcome.

What are some good, easy hikes for families near Salem Heights?

For a family-friendly outing, the Ault Park Pavilion loop from East Hyde Park is an excellent choice. It's a relatively short and easy loop. Another great spot is Orchard Heights Park, which features a one-mile, partially paved loop through a lush forest that kids often enjoy.

Can I find any hikes with waterfalls near Salem?

While the immediate Salem Heights area is known more for its woodland and creek-side trails, a short drive will take you to one of the most famous waterfall hikes in Oregon. Silver Falls State Park, about 20 miles east of Salem, features the spectacular 'Trail of Ten Falls,' a loop that takes you through a canyon and even behind several waterfalls.

What are the trail conditions like, especially regarding mud?

Many trails in the Willamette Valley, including those around Salem Heights, can get quite muddy, especially during the rainy season from fall through spring. Trails like the Croisan Creek Trail are unpaved and can become slick. It's always a good idea to wear waterproof hiking boots with good traction.

Are there any circular or loop trails available?

Yes, there are several loop trails perfect for a straightforward hike without backtracking. The Ault Park – Ault Park Pavilion loop from East Hyde Park offers a pleasant walk through the park. For a longer option, the trails within Minto-Brown Island Park can be combined to create various loops of different lengths.

How many hiking trails are there around Salem Heights?
