Wiesberg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Wiesberg Castle, Trisanna
Wiesberg Castle sits enthroned on a protruding wooded rock high above the wildly foaming Trisanna.
The castle was probably built in the 13th century. by the Bishopric of Chur. end of the 14th century the castle was a fief of the Counts of Tyrol and was owned by the powerful Rottenburgers, whose ancestral castle was located above Rotholz in the Lower Inn Valley. Since this family died out in 1411, Wiesberg was the property of the sovereign and was mortgaged several times, most recently in 1770 to the Counts of Wolkenstein, who owned it until 1840. In 1809 a fierce battle took place near the castle between Bavarian troops and a few hundred riflemen from Paznaun and Stanzertal.
Wiesberg Castle is currently privately owned and not open to the public.

A detour from the Via Claudia up to the Kronburg or to the guesthouse under the Kronburg is a hot tip. Beautiful location, especially at sunset. You can't go up to the Kronburg (closed). Continuing the journey via Riefenal to Zams is great.👍
