Speyer Cathedral (German: Speyerer Dom)

Highlight • Religious Site

Under no circumstances should you pass through Speyer without taking a look at the cathedral! It is the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1981. In addition to the actual visit to the cathedral, a visit to the crypt is always recommended. Also worth seeing: the cathedral bowl outside the church. This is often filled with wine for celebrations.

The Altpörtel was the western city gate in the city wall of Speyer. As if by a miracle, the Altpörtel escaped the devastation of the War of the Palatinate Succession. Today you can climb up to the top floor of the city gate and enjoy the view of Speyer and the cathedral from above.

St. George's Fountain, Speyer

Highlight • Monument

The St. Georg fountain is actually a war memorial, but does not look like it. Only when you look closely at the inscriptions you get on it. Built in 1930 and renovated in 1996.

The administrative building comprises three floors, which initially housed meeting rooms, card index rooms, and filing facilities for both the insurance company and the arbitration court located there. Apartments for the board of directors and the caretaker were also built on the second floor. The entrance portal on Maximilianstrasse features the Palatia as a niche figure and bore the Bavarian coat of arms until World War II. The facade is adorned with ornamentation, with the central section of the building and the third floor set back. This design is typical of Viennese aristocratic palaces of the Neo-Baroque period. The allegorical figures on pedestals on the third floor represent youth and diligence, industry, agriculture and farming, and old age. These were crafted from French Savonnières stone by the sculptor Gustav Adolf Bernd. The mansard roof is topped with a gable and balcony facing the cathedral.
