Hohenstaufen Castle Ruins and Viewpoint

Highlight • Castle

The Hohenstaufen is a witness mountain with a ruin, which is almost 10 kilometers north of the steep Albtraufs. Due to its exposed location, you have a beautiful all-round view from the summit. The castle used to be the headquarters of the Hohenstaufen family. The mountain was already settled in the early Middle Ages - a time long before the castle existed. The ruin can only be reached on foot or by bike and there is a small restaurant.

Altwinnenden Castle, also known as Burg Burg, is the ruin of a spur castle above the Höfen-Stöckenhof road in the Bürg district of the city of Winnenden.
In the first half of the 12th century the castle was built by the Lords of Winnenden and in 1181 the keep was built by Gottfried von Winnenden on the hilltop.

In 1210 the castle was mentioned as "castrum Winidum", and in 1212 and 1225 it was expanded. The gentlemen von Neuffen are also named as other owners. The castle fell into disrepair in the 15th century and was demolished from 1536 to 1538 except for the keep.

What was Winnenden's former name? In 1525, it was called Bürg, and in 1624, Altwinnenden. Altwinnenden Castle was the seat of the Lords of Winnenden before it became part of Württemberg. Initially, the town, along with the settlements of Schulerhof and Stöckenhof, belonged to the municipality of Baach. In 1686, the town was called Bürck bey Bach.

The castle church was built as a church of the Teutonic Order in the 14th century after several previous churches on the same site. The high altar is a reminder of the church's importance as a stop on the medieval Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela. Today the castle church is once again located on the newly developed Way of St. James from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Rottenburg am Neckar.
