Eichhof Castle is located here. It has a square basic shape and was originally a Gothic moated castle. In the 16th century it was then converted into a castle.

Today the seat of the Agricultural Center of the State of Hesse is located in the castle. In summer, however, the castle is transformed into the backdrop of the Bad Hersfeld Festival, which is performed here.

Neuenstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

Neuenstein Castle rises above the Saasen district of the Neuenstein community on a steep limestone cliff approx. 350 m above sea level. The castle, first mentioned in 1267, was built around the middle of the 13th century by Count Albert I von Wallenstein as Neuwallenstein. In 1318 the castle was besieged and destroyed.
The palace complex remained in ruins until 1357 and was rebuilt from 1357 by Simon von Wallenstein and replaced by the Hessian landgrave Otto the Elder. Sagittarius (1366) conquered. The floor plan of the main castle forms a regular square, which is dominated by the 28 m high tower, the so-called keep. The feudal and ownership structures of Neuenstein Castle were varied. A wonderful place; be sure to stroll through the rose garden and the nature garden. There's a wealth of information and examples of how you can contribute to biodiversity conservation in your own garden.

The castle was probably built around the middle of the 13th century by Albert I of Count von Wallenstein (formerly Count vonSchauburg), who had resided at Wallenstein Castle ("Waldinsteyn") six kilometers to the northwest since the beginning of the century, according to which he also called himself since 1233. Both castles were on the road from Hersfeld via Homberg (Efze) and Fritzlar to Kassel. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Neuenstein_(Saasen)

In the heart of the Knüllwald forest, on a spur below Mount Babloh, lies the Wallenstein Castle ruins. They must have seemed fortified and impregnable in the Middle Ages, because outside the castle walls, the hills drop steeply on three sides. Today, the castle ruins provide the backdrop for rustic camping adventures: camping in the castle or in the courtyard, swimming in the charming natural swimming pool, and fishing in the castle pond are all possible here. Below the castle, there is a campsite that is also open to permanent campers. The restaurant offers fresh, regional cuisine and hosts fairytale evenings, where the illuminated castle becomes the focal point. https://www.deutsche-maerchenstrasse.com/poi/burgruine-wallenstein

The almost square inner castle is surrounded by a strong shield wall, large parts of which are still preserved. Many other buildings were demolished to obtain materials. A round stair tower that remained was recently converted into a lookout tower by installing a spiral staircase. Only a few remains of the walls of the spacious outer castle have survived. The former moat has been filled in. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgruine_Wallenstein
