Bichishausen Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The property belonged to the Counts of Achalm in the 11th century and to the Gundelfingers from the 13th century. The castle was built in the first half of the 13th century, probably by Swigger IV. Von Gundelfingen or Konrad II., Who later became the Württemberg district judge. A note from 1306 testifies that a tower was demolished around 1300 "to make his own castle stronger". During this time, the completely new construction of the castle with the construction of the massive shield wall is to begin. A typical shield wall castle with two courtyards was created. During the restoration of the castle in 1973, the stump of the keep from the 13th century was found.
In 1372 a Kuno Truchsess from Bichishausen fought on the Württemberg side in a battle against the imperial city of Reutlingen and fell.
Around the middle of the fourteenth century, possibly after the death of the last Truchsess von Bichishausen, the Truchsess von Magolsheim acquired the castle. Following the death of the last Truchsessen, the castle passed to the Buttlar family in 1510. Heinrich Treisch von Buttlar, imperial councilor and participant in the Turkish wars, had the castle adapted to the living requirements of his time and the walls built. His wife Anna, née Truchsessin von Ringingen, died in 1545. After her death, the complex gradually fell into disrepair. Wolf von Vellberg followed as owner in 1545, Count Georg II von Helfenstein in 1552 and Prince von Fürstenberg in 1627.
The castle was destroyed in the 17th century. In 1923 the castle was privately owned and in 1972 it was transferred to the district. It was restored again between 1973 and 1975.

The ascent and descent are recommended and definitely worth it. A fantastic view will reward you. The view into the Lautertal and towards the Alps is very beautiful. It is also a good place to take a short snack break before heading back to Hayingen. There are tables and benches on the tower.

Rechtenstein Castle is a former double castle in the village of Rechtenstein, whose origins date back to the 11th century. The von Stein men lived in one half, the von Rechtenstein men in the other half. From the bike path you have a great view over the Danube to the ruins.

Very great and impressive place with the beautiful castle ruins. Here a small rest on the Danube is appropriate. There is also a drinks stand with vending machines on site.

If you are in the area, you should definitely pay a visit to the Wartstein ruins. You have a wonderful view of the Lautertal and, in good weather, a distant view of the mountains. However, the viewing platform on the ruins can only be reached via a spiral staircase that is attached to the outside of the wall. This is possibly not for someone who is not free from giddiness or who has problems with spiral staircases.

There is a castle tavern in the castle complex. This is hosted by the Albverein (see website for opening times). There is also the possibility to stay overnight in the castle. There is no parking space at the castle. A few meters away is the Breitle playground, where you can park your car.
