The bishop's castle was first mentioned by the Markdorf and Homburg knights around 1300. In 1414, control of Markdorf passed to the Prince-Bishop of Constance. From 1510, Hugo von Landenberg had the castle on the city wall expanded into an impressive residential tower and is said to have used it as a residence between 1529 and 1531. The so-called Knight's Hall on the top floor probably dates from this time (today used as a conference room and ballroom). His successor was Reich Vice Chancellor Balthasar Merklin. As a result, the castle repeatedly served as a summer residence for the bishops of Constance. In 1536, Cardinal Prince-Bishop Markus Sittich had the garden laid out at the castle. Under Prince-Bishop Johann Franz Schenk von Stauffenberg, the three middle floors of the tower were given a Baroque design around 1730. At around the same time, he had the so-called nave extension, the New Palace, built along the western city wall between the residential tower and the lower city gate. In 1737 the castle barn was rebuilt on the southern city wall. After secularization it was owned by the Grand Duchy of Baden. The castle buildings passed to private owners in the middle of the 19th century. Since 1985, the ensemble of Bishop's Castle, New Castle and former castle barn (rebuilt in 1984 while preserving the medieval city wall) has been used as a hotel. In October 2015, a feasibility study commissioned by the city of Markdorf on the use of the ensemble as a town hall was presented to the public. The local council's building decision to move the town hall to the Bishop's Palace was overturned by a referendum in December 2018 (Wikipedia).

Heiligenberg Castle, located high above Lake Constance and visible from afar, shapes the Linzgau landscape, and is rightly considered the pearl of the Renaissance.

The castles in the Heiligenberg region are rich in history. Heiligenberg Castle is a magnificent example of Renaissance architecture, constructed between 1538 and 1584, and remarkably survived centuries almost unchanged. Bischofsschloss Markdorf has a long history, serving as a residence for bishops and later as a hotel, with parts dating back to the 14th century. Hohenfels Castle also has an eventful past, having served various purposes over time.
Absolutely. Heiligenberg Castle is situated on a plateau offering impressive views of Lake Constance and the Alps. The ruined Heiligenburg Castle (in Schwalm-Eder-Kreis, Hesse, not the main Heiligenberg castle in this guide) also provides extensive panoramic views from its ramparts, being located on a volcanic hill.

Visitors frequently praise the stunning views, especially from Heiligenberg Castle, which offers a fantastic panorama of Lake Constance. The princely Heiligenberg Castle in Linzgau is the main residence of the Fürstenberg family and is generally not open to the public for regular visits. Access is usually limited to special occasions, such as 'Open Monument Day'. However, you can enjoy the exterior and the surrounding views.
While the main Heiligenberg Castle is known for its aristocratic history with the Fürstenberg family, another Schloss Heiligenberg near Jugenheim in Hesse has deep ties to European royal families, including the Battenberg/Mountbatten lineage and visits from Russian Tsars. It's important to note this is a different location from the Heiligenberg in Baden-Württemberg featured in this guide.
Yes, the region offers various options. For instance, near Bischofsschloss Markdorf, there's a recommended restaurant called Lichtblick right across the street, and the castle itself has been used as a hotel. The broader Heiligenberg area provides cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options to suit different preferences.
The best time to visit depends on your preferences. Spring and summer offer pleasant weather for exploring the castle grounds and enjoying outdoor activities like cycling and hiking. Autumn provides beautiful foliage, enhancing the scenic views. While some castles might have limited access, the surrounding landscapes and viewpoints can be enjoyed year-round, though winter might bring colder temperatures and potential snow.
Yes, the region offers a mix of well-preserved structures and historical ruins. For example, the 'Castle near Burgweiler' is noted as a historical site where you can still discern the former presence of a castle, even if it has seen better days. Additionally, remains of the older 'Altheiligenberg' castle can be found in the forest west of the current Heiligenberg Castle.
When visiting Salem Castle Lake, be sure to take a walk around the lake, which takes approximately 45 minutes. You can 'walk' over the water at three different points, and there's a great adventure landscape with a water playground for children. Admission is free, and free parking is available.
