The detour to the castle ruins is definitely worth it. The former weir system is at a height of 630 meters and from here you have a great view of the five valleys in which the city has spread.

The castle was built around 1500 by the knight Hans von Rechberg. The castle complex was ignored for almost three centuries; excavations and restoration only began in 1957. Thanks to the courageous efforts of committed citizens, the facility is very well preserved.

The “Bergstüble” restaurant is now closed. But you can enjoy your break on the thick castle walls including a wonderful view of Schramberg.

Schiltach Historic Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

The heart of the city of Schiltach is the market square in the old town. That was the case before, because this is where the important connecting routes through the Black Forest from the Strasbourg area and towards Rottweil come together. Schiltach was the last stop for those passing through before climbing into the Swabian region. The old town has been a listed building since 1971.

All information about the city and its sights can be found in the tourist information in the town hall.

Schenkenburg was built around 1250. The stump of the keep still stands, as do parts of the palas, the former hall, which still reach up to 16 meters in height. The zwinger system is partially still present, but heavily overgrown. At the foot of the castle ruins, you will find an Italian restaurant. It is closed on Tuesdays.

Alpirsbach Abbey (Kloster Alpirsbach)

Highlight • Religious Site

Very worth seeing monastery complex. The dimensions alone are proof of the importance that Alpirsbach Abbey once had in the region. A visit to the brewery and the Löwenpost brewery inn is also recommended.

The town hall is at the highest point on the market square. It was built in 1593 in the Renaissance style and is the landmark of Schiltach. The town hall only received its distinctive stepped gable in 1905. The facade paintings were not created until 1942. The tourist information office is also located in the town hall.

Easily reachable after a short climb. Beware, the stair stones are very slippery when wet. Good that a retaining steel cable has been installed. The many information boards are very informative and well illustrated.
