View of Niederalfingen Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

Attention: Extremely steep climb if you want to go up the castle by bike. We walked up the next day.

Niederalfingen Castle, also called Marienburg or Fugger Castle, is a spur castle on a mountain spur above the Kochertal in the Niederalfingen district of the municipality of Hüttlingen in the Ostalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg.

Around 1050 the castle was built as a Hohenstaufen complex to secure important trade routes, after 1300 it became the property of the Knights of Seckendorf, in 1368 it became the property of Count Eberhard the Greiner of Württemberg, in 1415 it became the property of the nobles of Hürnheim and in 1551 it is now mighty castle complex to the Augsburg Fuggers, who rebuilt and expanded the castle from 1575 to 1577.

The castle now serves as a youth education center, leisure center and school camp. The bailiwick building located below the castle wall houses the local history museum of the municipality of Hüttlingen.

Kapfenburg Castle

The castle is great on the hill above Lauchheim. The road down to Lauchheim is very steep and easy to drive at high speed. As a departure perfect, however, many cars thunder in the ascent.

The Kocherburg A thousand years ago, the spur castle secured the power of the Counts of Dillingen. After extensive archaeological security measures, the ruins can now be explored by anyone. An award-worthy civic project! Why did you need a castle in the Middle Ages? Castles protected the defenseless, castles secured influence for powerful men. This was also the case with the Kocherburg, which was first mentioned in 1300 as "castrum Kochenburch". However, it is probably much older. Its name goes back to the Lords of Kochen, who defended the interests of the Ellwangen monastery in the region as servants as early as 1147. In the middle of the 14th century, the military character of the castle was lost. The Kocherburg served the Ellwangen bailiffs primarily as the seat of the administrative district of the same name, "Amt Kochenburg". But not all of these bailiffs were popular with the people of Unterkochen. The legend of the hunting-obsessed Junker Hans testifies to this. Source: https://www.aalen.de/die-kocherburg.185009.25.htm

From the Kocher-Jagst cycle path you should definitely take the short detour to Kapfenburg. The inner courtyard is freely accessible and the castle is simply worth seeing. Since 1999, the international music school academy at Schloss Kapfenberg has had its headquarters here. We were lucky enough to be accompanied by classical music as we toured the farm. A complete tour of the castle is only possible as part of a guided tour.
