View from the Gans (Bad Kreuznach)

Highlight • Viewpoint

The viewpoint goose is located in the middle of the nature reserve Bad Kreuznach city forest (walking area goose). The name goose is probably due to a Celtic name of the scree. From the vantage point offers a magnificent view over the spa towns of Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg and Bad Kreuznach. The 320-meter high vantage point can be reached from the castle Rheingrafenstein and the observatory above both spa towns by bike, but it should be a mountain bike :-)

The tower is fenced wide. Therefore, the summit offers less beautiful views than it used to be on the Soonwaldsteig from the heights.

Wildenburg Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

ATTENTION: Currently (January 2026), the tower is closed due to damage to the wooden structure. A reopening date is not yet foreseeable.

nlphh.de/blog/wildenburg-turm-vorerst-gesperrt-wegen-schaeden

The Wildenburg Castle ruins are situated at approximately 630 meters above sea level on the Wildenburger Kopf hill overlooking the Idarbach valley. It was the highest castle in the Hunsrück region.

Only a few remnants of the upper castle, perched atop a rocky outcrop, remain. A 22-meter-high observation tower was built on the summit of the rock, starting in 1980 and completed in 1981. From its 15-meter-high viewing platform, which is arranged in a ring around the tower, it offers excellent panoramic views. Orientation panels on the parapet explain the points of interest.

The spiral staircase and the covered viewing platform are constructed of concrete and are very stable, therefore there is little risk of vertigo.

... (Unfortunately, Komoot has combined the observation tower, the restaurant, and the wildlife enclosure into one highlight!)

Nahekopf Plateau and Kaiserallee

Highlight • Historical Site

The Kaiserallee (Imperial Avenue) is striking, with portraits of several Roman emperors. This makes the adjacent, fenced-in, and partially overgrown areas with foundation walls barely noticeable. In accessible areas, these are mostly indicated as reconstructions (reinforcement mats filled with rubble stones), allowing one to get an impression of the size and layout.

Alteburg Tower

Highlight • Monument

At an altitude of around 620 meters, the Alteburg is one of the highest mountains in the Soonwald. On top of the wooded summit stands since 1893, the 20-meter high lookout tower. In addition to the observation deck, this also has a small shelter. The platform is freely accessible at all times and offers you a wonderful view over the wide landscape.

Just a few meters from the lookout tower is also the trekking site Alteburg on a former Köhlerplatz. All information about the trekking site can be found at soonwaldsteig.de/trekkingcamps/die-camps/trekkingcamp-alteburg.

Tirolerstein Memorial

Highlight • Monument

The violent death of a Tyrolean trader in 1741 gave this memorial stone with a cross its name.

In winter 20/21 a tree fell on the previous cross due to a snow break. The Heimatverein set it up there together with the memorial stone in 1981 and at the same time created the small rest area with a table and benches.

This cross was made of wood that had been cut out of a power pole 40 years ago and then found its place on the ridge of the Dollberge at the site of the historic bloodshed.

After such a long time, the cross was not only damaged by the snow break, but also so rotten and weathered that a new one was made from the trunk of a Douglas fir and erected.

If you take the inconspicuous junction, which is marked with a long labeled board on a tree, you come to a craggy rock with a great view of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.

Tips from the Community

Dirk Rüger
June 5, 2025, Hexentanzplatz am Wildenburger Kopf

This legendary place lies between gnarled trees and jagged rocks – with a simple wooden sign, yet a mystical aura. The name "Witches' Dance Ground" lends the scene a very unique atmosphere, which is particularly intense in the frosty winter. A quiet, slightly eerie place with a sense of historical magic. 💡 Tip 🔮 Stand for a moment in the middle of the square – history can almost be felt in the quiet snow.

It is a memorial to an unpunished murder that occurred deep in the forest around 285 years ago. A large wooden cross stands on the base of the so-called Tirolerstein, located in the heart of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and directly on the border between the Birkenfeld and Trier-Saarburg districts. A seating area in front of it invites you to take a break in the greenery. Since the former chapel in the nearby Neuhütten district of Muhl was converted into the National Park Church a few years ago, and since then, star hikes have been held there, the Tirolerstein has also been a place where believers occasionally hold services.

The Idarkopf offers excellent panoramic views over the surrounding Hunsrück heights. The new Idarkopf tower, a hybrid construction made of wood and hot-dip galvanized steel, was opened in December 2022 after the previous wooden tower, which was damaged by fire in 2018, was demolished in February 2022.

Place in front of a rock wall. There are also witches' dance places elsewhere, for example in the Harz and near Annweiler.

The observation tower on the Idarkopf mountain in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, located in the EdelSteinLand region, offers breathtaking panoramic views from its height of over 30 meters. The original tower was destroyed by fire in 2018; now, a hybrid structure made of construction timber and hot-dip galvanized steel graces the summit. The new observation tower is a real eye-catcher. The platform is modeled on a bird's nest. 170 steps lead up. Those who are not afraid of heights will be rewarded with a great 360° panorama.
