This park has a lot going on. Fun to ride through the light display in December, and a variety of events throughout the year, including cyclocross, archery competitions, Highland games; and through it all, walkers and picnickers

Lower Millpond makes a nice stopover if you're cycling the New Haven & Northampton Canal Greenway. The actual mill itself is on the other side of the paved greenway, and has been transformed into a commercial development with art galleries, restaurants, shops and a brewery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any dog-friendly hiking trails in Northampton?

Yes, many conservation areas and parks in and around Northampton are dog-friendly, but policies can vary. Most trails require dogs to be on a leash. For example, the Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area is a popular spot for dog walkers. Always check the specific regulations for the area you plan to visit before you go.

What are some easy, family-friendly hikes near Northampton?

Northampton offers many gentle trails perfect for families and casual walkers. The Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary loop is an excellent choice, offering a flat, 2-mile path through forests and meadows where you can look for birds and other wildlife. The paved Norwottuck Rail Trail is also great for strollers and little legs.

Where can I find hikes with good scenic viewpoints?

For panoramic views of the Pioneer Valley and the Connecticut River Oxbow, head to the nearby Mount Holyoke Range. The trails in Skinner State Park lead to the summit of Mount Holyoke, where the historic Summit House offers some of the most rewarding vistas in the region. Mount Tom State Reservation also provides excellent viewpoints from its higher elevations.

Are there any challenging hikes in the Northampton area?

While most local trails are easy to moderate, you can find more strenuous climbs in the surrounding ranges. The Mount Tom State Reservation and Mount Holyoke Range offer trails with significant elevation gain that will challenge experienced hikers. For a route with a bit more climbing, consider the Mineral Hill Summit loop, which involves over 480 feet of ascent.

Can I get to hiking trails using public transport?

Some trails are accessible via public transportation. The Norwottuck Rail Trail, a paved path connecting Northampton with nearby towns, can be accessed from several points within the city. You can use the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) bus service to get close to trailheads like those for the rail trail or Look Park. However, for more remote areas like state parks, a car is generally more convenient.

What kind of wildlife might I see while hiking around Northampton?

The area's diverse habitats support a variety of wildlife. The Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary is a prime location for birdwatching, with trails meandering through forests, meadows, and wetlands. On trails throughout the region, it's common to see deer, squirrels, and chipmunks. Keep an eye out for waterfowl and turtles near lakes and rivers, such as at Fitzgerald Lake.

Are there any waterfall hikes near Northampton?

Yes, the region has several charming waterfalls you can hike to. While not directly in Northampton, nearby spots like Chapel Falls and Sanderson Brook Falls offer beautiful scenery and are worth the short drive. These trails often involve some rocky terrain but reward hikers with the sight and sound of cascading water.

What are the trail conditions like in the winter?

Winter hiking can be beautiful, but you should be prepared for snow and ice on the trails. Paved paths like the Norwottuck Rail Trail may be plowed, but woodland paths will be snow-covered. It's highly recommended to use microspikes or other traction devices for your boots, especially on trails with any elevation change. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.

Where can I find a good circular walk?
