The Koschutahaus on the Mrzli-Log-Alm (Karawanken) is not only a fully staffed mountain refuge, but also the mountaineering and training center of the Austrian Alpine Club (Naturfreunde Kärnten) and a day trip destination on the "Alpine Cultural Trail." The alpine hut enjoys sunny views beneath the steep limestone cliffs of the Koschuta. It is a popular starting point for hikes or challenging mountain and climbing tours. All guests are treated to lovingly prepared home-style cooking from Carinthian cuisine! The best local delicacies, excellent drinks, and a great atmosphere are all part of the experience here. Everything we ate was excellent and plentiful. The hut owner is very friendly and accommodating. We'll be back! Next time, though, with a sled 😉. The Koschutahaus can be reached via the groomed trail using snowshoes, touring skis, or hiking boots. Hut owner Michi ensures perfect conditions with his small snow groomer!

Those who venture out of the maze of Klagenfurt's alleyways, the sounds of ice cream parlors, buses, and construction sites, will find a quiet counterpoint above Lake Wörthersee: the Zillhöhe. A place made for people with tired legs and a wide view. The path up leads through a sparse mixed forest where the trees still know how to cast shadows without chasing the sun. Birdsong instead of traffic noise, the scent of pine instead of exhaust fumes – and at some point, you find yourself standing in front of a wooden pavilion that looks as if someone had deliberately placed it precisely where the world comes to rest a little. Next to it is a wooden bird feeder, half-hidden in the greenery, which the surrounding birds apparently appreciate as a canteen. And then – through the trees – it flashes into view: Lake Wörthersee. Turquoise blue, as if someone had simply relocated the Alps to the Mediterranean. Up here, time is more generous. Conversations become slower, thoughts more airy. The view isn't just for your smartphone, it's also for your heart. You see how the lake blends into the landscape, how villas and forests nestle along its edge, and you can't help but fall silent as well. A place that wants nothing – except for you to stay. Maybe with a snack. Maybe with a book. Or just for the sake of it. Because anyone who has ever sat here understands why some places don't need much to be special – except a wooden roof, a birdhouse, and a view that stretches far.

It stands there as if dotted – the Klagenfurter Hütte – between rock, forest, and skylight, at a height where cell phone reception sometimes breaks down, but your breath naturally deepens. You don't pass by here by chance. Anyone who wants to go to the Klagenfurter Hütte wants to go there. And you can feel it – in the conversations at the table, in the silence on the bench in front of the door, in the smile of the landlady. The hut, a mixture of Styrian coziness and Alpine austerity, crouches beneath a steep shingle roof, as if trying to shrink before the mighty rock massif behind it. But it doesn't need to – it is a rock in itself: a starting point, a place of retreat, a place of power. The Kosiak is to the left, the Bielschitza to the right, and those who aspire to higher ground can continue to the Hochstuhl or over the ridge into Slovenian territory. But many stay – with bowls of soup and cottage cake, overlooking the stone-gray thunderstorm in the Karawanks. The air tastes of stone pine, limestone, and wanderlust. On the map, the lines and elevations look like they were drawn by a child – harmless. In reality, however, every step is part of a small adventure. The paths are windy, the wind stubborn, and sometimes you just sit there, stare at the ridge, and think: So this is freedom.

Anyone who has experienced the Meerauge also knows this moment: Somewhere between the final bends, when the world falls away beneath you, leaving only meadows, pines, and sky. The Ogrisalm suddenly lies there like a forgotten chapter from an old hiking guide – a few huts, a wind that smells of wood stoves and dry grasses, and a silence so clear you can almost hear it. Up here, the cows speak louder than the Wi-Fi, and the mountains – Wertatscha, Bielschitza, Grad – simply stand there, like in an old legend. No innkeeper, no noise, no menu. Just a bit of time, a bench in front of the hut, and a view that slowly becomes etched in your memory. The Ogrisalm is not a destination, it is a pause. And when you descend again, you know: The world has stayed below – at least for a moment.
