The Tiefburg, also known as Handschuhsheim Castle, is the ruins of a medieval moated castle in the Handschuhsheim district of Heidelberg The Handschuhsheimer Tiefburg is the only moated castle on Bergstrasse. It covered a much larger area (approx. 5 hectares) than the residential castle that is still visible today suggests. It was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War and finally destroyed in January 1689 in the War of the Palatinate Succession. From 1911 to 1913, the deep castle was renovated by the owner, Raban Graf von Helmstatt, and the residential building was made usable again. Bleickard von Helmstatt (1871–1952) sold the castle to the city of Heidelberg in 1950. The residential castle is surrounded by a modern moat. Since it was transferred to the city of Heidelberg, it has been used by the Handschuhsheim district association, and numerous local festivals take place in its courtyard. The deep castle is the focus of Walter Laufenberg's historical novel “Knight, Death and the Devil,” which was published by Langen Müller in Munich in 1992.
