Great view from West Ridge Trail onto the Missouri River. There is not too much elevation gain to get to this spot, so it is definitely worth the effort for the great views.

This monument was dedicated in 1992 and is situated in a beautiful setting next to Smith Lake. It honors the memory of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments of the U.S. Army. Around the monument, there are benches that also offer excellent views of the lake.

Merritt Lake is a reservoir on the Trails West Golf Course. It's man-made, and it's a wheelchair-accessible fishing spot as well! Before fishing, be sure to check the rules and regulations for the current season. Local Kansas City regulations dictate when fishing is allowed, the maximum size of the fish you can keep, as well as how many fish you can keep.

Yes, many trails in the area welcome dogs, but it's important to check specific regulations. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest generally allows dogs on trails as long as they are on a leash. However, dogs are not permitted in The Enchantments permit area. For a reliable dog-friendly option, consider trails outside of the most restricted zones, but always verify rules before you go.
For a gentle and scenic walk, the
Icicle Gorge Nature Loop is an excellent choice. It's a relatively flat 4-mile loop that follows Icicle Creek, offering beautiful river views and shady forest paths. Another great option is the Waterfront Park Trail, located right in town, which provides easy, flat trails along the Wenatchee River perfect for all ages.
While the region is more famous for its alpine lakes, you can still find some lovely water features. The Icicle Gorge Nature Loop offers views of small cascades and rapids along Icicle Creek. For more significant waterfalls, you may need to explore trails a bit further into the Cascade mountains, where seasonal snowmelt creates impressive displays in the spring and early summer.
The Icicle Ridge Trail is a popular and rewarding challenge. This steep hike gains significant elevation quickly, but it rewards your effort with stunning panoramic views over the town of Leavenworth, the Icicle River Valley, and the surrounding Cascade peaks. Be prepared for a strenuous climb.
Permits are required for certain high-demand areas, most notably The Enchantments, where a lottery system is in place for overnight permits. Day-use in some parts of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, like the trail to Colchuck Lake, also requires a permit. Many other trails only require a Northwest Forest Pass for parking at the trailhead. Always check the specific requirements for your chosen trail on the U.S. Forest Service website before you go.
The best time to see the alpine larches turn their brilliant golden color is typically from late September through mid-October. The exact timing varies each year depending on weather conditions. Hikes into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, such as those leading towards Lake Stuart or Colchuck Lake, are famous for their spectacular larch displays during this narrow window.
Yes, the Old Pipeline Bed Trail (also known as the Penstock Trail) is a fantastic choice. It's an easy 2.5-mile trail that follows the Wenatchee River, offering serene views and access to quiet river beaches. It's a local favorite for a relaxed stroll with beautiful scenery.
Leavenworth transforms into a winter wonderland with many opportunities for snowshoeing. The trails at Waterfront Park and the Icicle Gorge Nature Loop are often accessible and provide beautiful, gentle routes. For more adventurous outings, many of the lower-elevation Forest Service roads and trails become popular snowshoe tracks. Always check avalanche forecasts and trail conditions before heading out.
The hike to Colchuck Lake is a world-class experience, leading to a stunning turquoise lake set against the dramatic backdrop of Dragontail and Colchuck Peaks. It's a strenuous and very popular hike, so be prepared for crowds and a challenging trail. An alternative with a beautiful lake destination is the trail to Lake Valhalla.
The hike to Colchuck Lake is considered difficult. It is approximately 8 miles round-trip with over 2,200 feet of elevation gain. The trail is well-maintained but becomes very steep and rocky in the final sections leading up to the lake. It requires good physical fitness and proper hiking gear.
