Both banks of the Stekense Vaart or the Kanaal van Stekene are recognized as a quiet area. Here you can enjoy a landscape with exceptionally beautiful views. The Vaart was dug in 1315. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the canal was an important economic artery in the region. The waterway played an important role in the transport of bricks and tiles. These were manufactured in the numerous brick and tile factories that this region was rich in.

Oriented church with surrounding cemetery. Northern part of the surrounding brick cemetery wall provided with seven chapels with a group of statues in a niche dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady, according to the memorial stone built in 1927. Marian grotto behind the church from 1925. To replace a barn chapel in Sint-Elooipolder (recognized as the parish church of Overslag in 1692), a chapel was built in 1711-1712, paid for by Bishop P. Van der Noot. From 1692 to 1822, the chapel of Overslag was served by Recollet priests. Source Inventory of Immovable Heritage Additional information: In 2019, the parish of Our Lady of the Nativity of Overslag merged with the parish of Sint-Catharina Wachtebeke. The parish boundaries were also redrawn, which meant that the piece of Dutch territory was transferred to the Catholic Church of Axel. The church of Overslag was withdrawn from worship.
