The John Muir Country Park is an area of forestry and beach maintained to promote the natural habitats and nature tourism. The area is home to over 400 species of plant as well as lots of important insect, butterfly and bird species. You can walk around the edge of the country park or follow one of the inland trails through the woods. Look out for the remains of the trenches and firing range left over from training and defence during the world wars.

Now a forestry plantation that grows right up to the beach and alongside the John Muir Country Park. This area was used extensively for military training and defence during the 1st and 2nd world wars. There is evidence of trench systems and firing ranges around the edge of the woodland. Later the area was a gold course, now it's a wonderful area for a quiet walk. Watch out for the deer.

Beautiful area to walk along. Unfortunately a lot of trees have been blown over in recent storms.

Great area for birdwatching. A section that is between Belhaven beach and the wooded plantation (John muir way).

Dunbar coast is amazing and always pleases me when I am there. Lovely small rocky cliffs next to the golf course and to the west is beautiful Belhaven beach with views over to Bass rock.

Yes, Pressmennan Wood is very family-friendly. The main attraction for children is the 'Glingbobs and Tootflits' sculpture trail, a whimsical circular path featuring tiny, carved homes for mythical creatures in the trees. The paths are generally accessible, though some can be muddy. For a shorter, easier walk that's great for all ages, consider the East Links Family Park β Hedderwick Hill Plantation loop from Biel.
The 'Glingbobs and Tootflits' trail is a magical sculpture trail designed to delight visitors, especially younger ones. It's a circular route where you can discover intricately carved, miniature houses for fantastical creatures hidden amongst the trees. Created by a local sculptor, it adds a sense of wonder to the woodland walk.
Yes, dog walking is popular in Pressmennan Wood. Dogs are welcome, but it's important to keep them under control, especially around wildlife and other walkers. The woodland is managed by the Woodland Trust, which generally requests that dogs are kept on a lead or in sight and come back when called.
The trails consist of a mix of forest roads and natural earth paths. While many sections are well-maintained, some paths, particularly those on steeper slopes or closer to the lake, can become muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended for a comfortable hike.
Yes, there is a small car park at the main entrance to the wood. However, it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays. The approach road to the car park is a single-track dirt road that can be rough with potholes, so it's best to drive with care.
Getting to Pressmennan Wood without a car is challenging as it's in a rural location. The nearest town with public transport links is Dunbar, which is several miles away. From there, you would likely need to take a taxi to the woodland entrance. It's best to plan your journey in advance.
Yes, the path network is well-suited for circular walks of various lengths. The main sculpture trail is a popular short loop. For those seeking a longer and more challenging circular hike, the Common Plantation loop from Stenton is a difficult 19.1 km route that explores the wider woodland area.
Pressmennan Wood offers diverse natural beauty. A key feature is Pressmennan Lake, a serene 200-year-old reservoir. The area is also rich in wildlife, including deer, otters, and various bird species.
The diverse habitats support a wide array of wildlife. Keep an eye out for roe deer in the quieter parts of the wood. The area is also home to otters, bats, and owls. Birdwatchers may see woodpeckers, buzzards, and crossbills in the trees, while kingfishers and Mandarin ducks can sometimes be spotted on Pressmennan Lake.
While Pressmennan Wood is inland, the East Lothian coastline is not far away. For a scenic coastal walk, you could try the Belhaven Bridge β Belhaven Bridge loop from West Barns, which explores the area around the iconic 'Bridge to Nowhere' at Belhaven Bay.
