The origins of the church building date back to a convent founded in the late 9th century and named after Saint Cecilia of Rome. It was long assumed that the first Cologne Cathedral stood on this site. However, excavations have ruled out this tradition. Instead, the foundations of a rectangular church were found, which probably belonged to the convent. According to documents relating to the convent's difficult economic situation in the 10th century, Archbishop Brun bequeathed 50 pounds of silver to the convent in 965 for the completion of the church. It appears that the crypt, rebuilt in 1970 to the west of the church, was first constructed around this time to house relics. The Archbishop of Cologne used to celebrate the second Christmas Mass in St. Cecilia's Church after St. Mary in the Capitol, thus emphasizing the special significance of the convent, which declined over the course of the Middle Ages.

Among the great circle of saints, Caecilia is primarily responsible for good sound—if one can put it so casually here—because she is the patron saint of church music. Many sacred choirs are named after her. The dates of her life from the corresponding legend are not historically confirmed; she is said to have been a martyr from the early third century. The patron saint's feast day, or her memorial day in the calendar of saints, is November 22nd in all major Christian denominations.

The Sülztalbahn was built from 1890 onwards. The Immekeppel station was located directly opposite the then active ironworks in order to promote the local economy. Passenger traffic was then completely stopped in 1960 and freight traffic in 1966. The reception building and the immediately adjacent land were purchased by a freight forwarder and were listed as a historical monument in 1983.
