The Makapu'u via Pearl City road cycling route offers a dynamic tour across O'ahu, blending stunning coastal scenery with historically rich urban landscapes. You'll start with dramatic Pacific Ocean views near Makapu'u Beach Park, then transition towards Pearl City, catching glimpses of Pearl Harbor. The route includes the challenging Makapu'u Lighthouse Road, which features a steep 7.6% average gradient, making it a rewarding ride for those seeking varied terrain.

Planning your ride means considering the heat; an early morning start is highly recommended, especially in warmer months, as shade is limited along parts of the route. The Pearl Harbor Bike Path and Aiea Heights Loop offers a unique road cycling challenge, covering 22.7 miles (36.5 km) with 2569 feet (783 metres) of elevation gain, typically completed in about 2 hours and 11 minutes. This moderate route combines the paved Pearl Harbor Bike Path, offering views of mothballed battleships and taro farms, with the Aiea Heights Loop, which is primarily a hiking trail. Be prepared for varied terrain, as the Aiea Heights section is not ideal for road bikes and may require dismounting, but rewards with lush forests and panoramic views of Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head.

For planning your ride, the Pearl Harbor Bike Path is easily accessible with multiple entry points and parking options. While the bike path itself is generally flat and suitable for all skill levels, the inclusion of the Aiea Heights Loop means you should anticipate a more rugged experience, especially after rain when the trail can be muddy and slippery. This route is best enjoyed by cyclists who are comfortable with mixed-surface riding or those who plan to adapt the route to stick to the paved sections.

This route provides a fascinating blend of historical and natural scenery, from the industrial backdrop of Pearl Harbor to the dense, fragrant lemon eucalyptus trees of Aiea Heights. The Aiea Loop Trail also holds remnants of a B-24 bomber crash from 1944, adding a historical layer to the natural beauty. It's a great option for those looking for a longer, more adventurous ride near Honolulu, offering a different perspective than typical coastal routes.

Pearl Harbor is a National Historic Landmark on the island of Oahu. The port and headquarters of the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy are known for the attack by Japanese forces on the US Pacific Fleet during World War II. This caused the USA to enter the war. At Pearl Harbor you can visit five historical sites that tell of the tragic events. You should set aside at least half a day for the WWII Valor in the Pacific Monument (USS Arizona Memorial), the Battleship Missouri Memorial, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, the USS Oklahoma Memorial and the Pacific Aviation Museum. https://www.tourlane.de/nord Amerika/usa/gehenswuerdigkeiten-hawaii/#waikiki-strand

Tantalus Drive leads up to one of, if not the, best lookouts in O'ahu! There is a huge lawn you can roll a picnic rug out on and watch as the sun goes down over Diamond Head Crater and the entire Waikiki region. If you biked up here, this is a great resting spot before you get to enjoy the fun, twisty descent back into town!
