Not a trail for beginners. Sturdy shoes are necessary. But they don't have to be alpine hiking boots. Trail running shoes are recommended - not waterproof ones, but ones that dry quickly and have a good, non-slip sole.

Always brilliant, beach running without shoes :-)

Although it's well-maintained, this trail is almost never level, and it can get slippery fast when wet. Keep an eye out for wild goats, many native plant species, and of course amazing views out over the water as you hike. Also, keep in mind that if you want to hike all the way to Kalalau Beach (or simply beyond Hanakapi'ai Valley), you need an overnight permit. Hanakapi'ai Beach is the usual turnaround point for day hikers.

Haena Beach is a park with lots of amenities where visitors can see tropical jungles join white sand beaches. Mount Makana (Bali Hai) is in the background and makes for great photography opportunities, especially around sunset and sunrise. When the water is calm, there is good swimming and shell-searching. It is very important for visitors to leave any shells they find on the beach. Surfing gets big in the winter, so visitors might do better watching the pro surfers rather than heading into the water themselves. There is a lifeguard station, restrooms, showers, and (permitted) campsites.

Very nice beach. Next door is also the well-known Dry and Wet Cave. Also a coconut you can treat yourself here.
