The terrain is quite varied. You'll find surfaced, accessible tracks directly around the reservoirs, which are suitable for most walkers. The area is a haven for wildlife. Around the reservoirs, look for waterbirds like the Great Crested Grebe and Tufted Duck. The surrounding moorlands are home to Red Grouse and Curlews. In the woodlands of Wyming Brook, you might spot Dippers and Nuthatches. The area is also important for mammals, including Water Voles and Brown Hares.
The reservoirs were constructed between 1833 and 1854 to provide clean water to Sheffield after a cholera epidemic. The area also holds remnants of a First World War training trench system used by the Sheffield City Battalion.
