This black sand beach is a popular attraction due to the beauty. The sand is created when hot lava contacts water, then fragments/ explodes. The waves then smooth the fragments into the smooth sand. There are small tidal pools for wading and the ocean is known for large waves here.

Located just off of the road is the Puʻukea Crater. This is a relatively small crater compared to the much larger crater residing next door, Kapoho Crater. There s also another unique geographic occurance known as 'Green Lake'. This is a green patch of forest that is completely surrounded by a lava flow.

Lava Tree State Park is a beautiful park. The park gets its name from lava molds of the tree trunks that were formed when a laval flow came through the area in 1790. The park offers a nice contrast with sooty, earth trees growing next to vibrant flowers and ferns.

Just off of the Chain of Craters Road you can see the Hõlei Sea Arch. This lava rock formation is 90-feet high and extends from the sea cliff. This structure is only temporary as the sea slowly erodes the land, so see it while you can! If you try to get a closer look, keep in mind that walking on flow fields can be hazardous due to deep earth cracks, uneven and unstable terrain, and razor-sharp lava.

Cycles ride around the north side of the Pu'ukea Crater. The crater is known as "Jello Mold Hill" because it looks like an upside-down mold. The Pu'ukea Crater area was once a private ranch, but today it is managed by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife and the Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a Volunteer Program.

Lava Tree State Monument is a public park. In 1790, a lava flow preserved a forest, which can be viewed along this 0.7-mile loop trail. The trail is paved, so bikes can be walked down this road. This preservation is unusual and was caused by a lava flow that swept through this forested area and left behind molds of the tree trunks.

If you are short on time, you can skip this stone arch on your day tour. Relatively small and inconspicuous. It's nicer in Hawaii.
