July 15, 2024, Legacy Trail – Oscar Scherer State Park Section

This trail extends around 18.5 miles and connects the towns of Sarasota and Venice. It’s nicely paved and popular among hikers, runners, and bikers. This section takes you through the heart of Oscar Scherer State Park, offering a pleasant route through a nicely forested area. This area is a habitat for the threatened Gopher Tortoises, so be careful as you run. If you see one, Florida Wildlife asks that you report it to help document where Gopher Tortoises are living in Florida communities, aiding in their protection. https://app.myfwc.com/HSC/GopherTortoise/

Braden River Nature Park is a more low-key spot to enjoy Florida's natural beauty. Fishermen have caught bass here in the ponds around the park, and gopher tortoises, ospreys, and red-shouldered hawks frequent the area. This nature park is more off the beaten path, so it may be an opportunity you can enjoy all to yourself.
