The church was built in the 13th century and has remained a ruin since its destruction in 1440.

An incredibly solid masonry of precisely hewn fieldstones characterizes this fairly well-preserved ruin. Considering that it has remained in this condition since 1440, this is also quite astonishing. The original church was built in the mid-13th century and fell victim to a major war. Lychen was conquered in the Pomeranian-Brandenburg War (1329-1333).

Lt. Information board: The construction of the town church began immediately after the town was founded in the mid-13th century. In the first decades, when the town wall had not yet been built, the church likely also served as a refuge for the Lychen population during attacks. The early Gothic fieldstone building, consecrated to John the Baptist since 1302, was extended and rebuilt several times over the centuries. A major town fire destroyed the original interior in 1684. During the reconstruction, the church received a Baroque high altar and a gallery.
