Since 1978, the museum has been housed in the Schöfferhaus, a former school building built in 1823. After the redesign in 2003, a historical equipment building of the volunteer fire department is also used as a museum. A city historical exhibition as well as presentations about the fishing trade and shipping, which played an important role for Gernsheim in the past, have been newly established. A separate department is dedicated to the printer and publisher Peter Schöffer, born in Gernsheim in the 15th century, who was the first employee of Johannes Gutenberg. Together with Johann Fust, he founded his own printing house in Mainz, where one of his main works, a 48-line Bible, was published in 1462. The development of printing technology can be traced, for example, on a printing press from around 1900. Source: https://museen-in-hessen.de/de/museen/museum_der_schoefferstadt_gernsheim
