Built in 1978 at a cost of $1,500,000. Its main span is 455 feet (139 m), with a total length of 745 feet (227 m). The bridge's high arch and sleek design are considered iconic and have won several national design awards. In order to comply with interstate grade laws, they had to cut and blast away everything below us.This hill is made of granite which is very hard to remove. ยพ of a million cubic yards of solid granite was removed. The bridge could have been placed a mile or two down the road for a fraction of the coast but the architect wanted to create something iconic and inspiring.
