The Batavia Portal is part of the Sandstone Sculpture Path project. The Batavia Portal became known through the mutiny ship Batavia, which sank on June 4, 1629, off the west coast of Australia while en route to the East Indies colonies from Holland. The Batavia carried a six-meter-high portal made of Bentheim sandstone, consisting of 137 stone pieces, as ballast cargo. It was salvaged with the ship in the 1970s and is now located in the Western Australian Maritime Museum in Geraldton, Australia. It was intended for the citadel of the port city of Batavia, now Jakarta in Indonesia. Following a geoscientific investigation by the Lower Saxony State Office for Geosciences and Raw Materials in Hanover, the sandstone could be assigned to the Bentheim rock deposit.

Be careful descending in autumn. Falling leaves can make the area very slippery.

The Sint Nicolaaskerk (St. Nicholas Church) in Denekamp has a rich history. Denekamp first appears as an independent parish in the church register from 1276. The first church was small and modest. In the mid-14th century, the church was expanded on the west side, and shortly afterwards, at the beginning of the 15th century, the tower was added. The church is built of Bentheim sandstone. In 1810, the church was significantly enlarged again when it was converted into a cruciform church. More than a hundred years later, another expansion was decided upon.
